How much oil to fill a 2.0 TDI? How to read the dipstick?

AS per my previous post I was running verrrry low on oil (I think!). I've bought the stuff at £43 for 4L and put 2L in but I'm still struggling to read the bloody dipstick! Any guidance? It's different to the manual.

It's currently oily up to the red arrow but hasn't filled in the gap at all as I would have expected it to? Have I put too much in? Or not enough?

I'll check mine when it's cooled down. I think 0.5L I put in last time took it from middle to full... but I can't really remember, it's done 5k since its last service. Dunno what level it's at now.

'Am I the dipstick here' or similar is a recent thread about how to read the different dipstick.
Look for how many of the ribs are filled with oil, and it should be within the more solid top and bottom sections-ie within the ribs, not above as it looks as if you have filled it...
Also you are supposed to wait for the oil to drain to the sump after having the car running or adding oil or you will get an inaccurate reading.

Also you are supposed to wait for the oil to drain to the sump after having the car running or adding oil or you will get an inaccurate reading.

Different dipstick again though. This isn't the ribbed kind it just has a solid smooth section. It coats with oil but doesn't stick and fill it like the ribbed kind.

If the oil's up to the red arrow on your drawing (I assume you wiped the dipstick, put it back in and then checked again?) then it's fine, if a smidge on the high side.

Topping up 0.5L at a time and checking the level every time stops you ever overfilling it.
