How strong are the BAM engines as in the new year im looking to get mine stage 2 power but have read on FB (from Niki at R-Tech) depending on how aggressive a stage 2 car is mapped it has been known to throw a rod as the standard rods only just handle stage 2 power maybe just a little more. Is this true and has anybody had these issues?

300lbs seems to be the lottery number on the rods, anything above people tend to change them

It's been known for these engines to throw a rod for a variety of reasons. I've even seen a standard engine do this. Not serviced regular, ragged to absolute death and the mapping seem to be the causes. Map has a lot to do with it but if your going to rtech then you should be ok. Rtech and badger 5 mapped cars I have yet to see them throwing rods!

if your spending decent money on the engine, then IMO its worth uprating the rods. doesn't seem worth the risk of wrecking the engine, also increases the potential of the engine and allows you to go aggressive with the map if you want to that is

It will depend on how its been treated I suppose.

I've lurked this forum for about 2 years and tales of broken rods are very rare. I do have them though, can't be too careful like :)

My LCR bent a rod on a Custom Code map which is meant to be quite progressive. I wouldn't risk it, I was lucky it bent the rod rather than throw it out the side of the block. I now have IE rods.

i think bent rods are less common on tuned cars as they tend to have already had forged rods put in them as the bigger power upgrades are added. while the heads off its also a good chance to clean the manifolds up and check the turbo over.

the sensible tuners (and I dont mean mappers) will advise rods for peace of mind Always when wanting the max from the cars, 300+ etc etc

300 is just a number and just as lottery based as the potential for bend/failure of the rods

Poor maps, which are spikey boost/torque delivery are the most likely ones to cause failure. Not all maps are created equal

These are OLD cars now.
What was notionally a number 10 years ago is not going to be valid today.
Many miles, many owners later, the lottery applies

I ran my lcr on revo stage 2. Ran that map for over 70k miles in just over two years. Was driven hard including various trackdays and sub 8min lap on the nurburgring (public lap so different from record for new leon cupra before anyone comments! ). Never had issues. Sold the car with 86k miles and ran the same as when I first bought it. Thought rods were only required if going down the big turbo route?

nope. many cars have popped rods on stage 1/2 level maps std turbo

those which have aggresive and high initial boost spike generally the more at risk engines

Presume your 70k was its first 70k not its second 70k, as many cars I see are well in to 100K miles now, 12 years old etc.. New fresh rods not the same as abused 100k rods with "unknown service use/abuse in its previous life"

Its a lottery

So my car for example then has 70k on clock and had quite an easy life so far (never been on track and myself and last owner who had it since 30k have used it as a family car so not likely to have hard life with kids in it) would be relatively safe at stage 2 with the correct map??

I've had my 54 plate LCR from 2008 it was Revo stage 1 then and had 35K on it, i staged 2 it not long after say at 45k (de cat FMIC LSD etc) and its now at 118K gets regular spirited driving (no track days) always serviced at an independents run on V-power and runs sweet as a nut, but the "rod thing" is always there in the back of my mind cos the cars been SO reliable and everything has a limit... i guess after you've serviced it well and had it mapped right its a case of how lucky do you feel...
