Ibiza FR 1.0 TSI DSG discussion

Hi all,

Not seen much around on the internet regarding the new VAG 1.0 TSI so thought I'd start a discussion here to see if anyone lurking has one...and find out what they think of it!

I've had mine for a couple of months now and find it much better than my 105hp 1.2 TSI in my old Ibiza FR. There is more torque and it warms up much faster from a cold start!

I am impressed with the DSG with it being my first auto. It's not as smooth as I thought it would be though. 1st to 2nd can be very harsh if you want to pull away fast from the lights (the change in gears is extremely noticeable and harsh). It also likes to pull away in 2nd instead of 1st unless you come to a COMPLETE stop, but other than that it's been perfect! Just takes some getting used to.

In terms of fuel economy I'm seeing about 42MPG on my commute which is up from the 37MPG my 1.2TSI got. My commute is quite heavy start/stop traffic, hence not seeing anywhere near the advertised figures!
Did a 200 mile motorway run down to Luton last week and managed 51.5MPG whilst not particularly trying. This was sticking to around 65MPH on the way and with blasts of up to 75MPH on the way back. Not bad.
I've got 1,200 miles on the clock now and It's only been drinking Shell fuel save (95RON) since I got it. I don't think I see much need for the premium fuels, although the I guess they could quiet it down a little.

When flooring it, you get the typical 3 cylinder noise but a lot more power than you expect from a car that makes that noise

I hope others can also share their experiences here (good and bad) whether you have a Skoda, Audi, SEAT or VW 1.0TSI/TFSI

I drove 1.2 TSI Fabia with 86PS and test drove the 1.0 Ibiza with 110PS, although with a manual.
The difference is mind blowing! There is a small turbo gap on the Ibiza, but after that it pulls like hell!
and as for the DSG, it can never as smooth as a manual when you're trying. We have a BMW 5 with its 8 speed torque converter auto box, and when you floor it, you still feel the changes, so its normal to feel the changes. Even in a manual, when you start hard and shift quick, you still feel that change from first to second.
And don't let me get started on my Corsa 1.2 Easytronic... when you push it, its like being in a car crash, constantly...

Noticed a strange noise with my car this evening. With it being a hot day, I pulled on to the drive and noticed the engine was 'whirring' at set intervals. I haven't had the air con on all day so it's not that...

I have got a couple of videos but not managed to upload them yet. I lifted the bonnet to have a look. It's loudest at the rear of the engine bay and also underneath the car. I also noted that the coolant reservoir was bubbling. Is this normal? The readout on the Maxidot say the coolant temp was 90c, so not overheating by any means?

All seemed fine on the way to work this morning. Opened the bonnet on arrival and the coolant looked fine, not bubbling this time. I wonder if the noise I hear could be related to the coolant bubbling? Maybe the water pump going into crazy mode when the engine is hot?
The fan was also not on during this incident yesterday. I've not actually seen/heard the engine fan come on as of yet.

A Porsche PDK box is smoother than any manual - including 1st to 2nd, so it can be done. In the case of the latest PDK box both 1st and 2nd gears are partially engaged at the same time during the change (ie both clutches are transmitting power and you get a pseudo ratio between 1st and 2nd)

The same techniques can obviously be used on any DCT - it's just that they haven't got around to it on DSG yet. But I have no doubt it won't be long. One reason that it hasn't happened might be fear of clutch wear -Porsche owners might be thought to be less concerned than Seat owners.

I am sure it can be better, but you must consider the cost. Pdk is much more expensive. And also the image, they wouldnt allow seat to have a top end box like porsche...
But again, dsg is by far the best auto box i have driven, from regular auto boxes available.

£1900 for the Porsche - £1200 for the Seat. When you consider that the Porsche box is built for well over 400bhp, and in small numbers, doesn't seem that expensive. I suspect, like a lot of things on cars the price reflects what the market will stand - not what it costs to produce.

It did the noise again at lunch time. It seems to be when it's very warm outside, hence why I've only just noticed it now.
Air con is off (not been on for whole journey)
Fans are off (not been on for whole journey)
Infotainment is also off

Not yet. Was just fishing for some opinions as to what it might be! The moment I step in the door of the dealers it will stop doing it. Guaranteed!

Just to add...I filigreed today that the noise increases in whine with the revs and decreases with the revs too. The mystery continues

Hi guys! first post here

so i've got my new 1.0 tsi ibiza a couple of weeks ago.

i really like it, it's my first vag!

the dsg is super cool, it took some time to get use to - but when you get use to it, it's amazing!

two problems i'm having:

1.) throttle delay. it takes like a second since i press the throttle to the moment the car actually moves. is that by definition? it's much better on sports mode - but still.

2.) cold start noise - whenever i start the car after a night i have this 2 second noise, which was familiar with the old engines (tensioner 1.2 tsi service bulletin).

Hi, glad you're enjoying it. Welcome to the club

The throttle delay is a characteristic of the DSG. I usually take my foot off the brake, and let it start to creep forward itself before I start to accelerate. That way, the clutches are engaged and ready to go rather than them 'snapping' and jerking the car when panicking and jabbing the throttle down!

Mine annoys me that it is SO hesitant to change down to 1st at slow speeds. In my manual, I NEVER started from pretty much a stop in second gear. The DSG seems to always do this unless you come to an absolute stop. Because of this, in very slow crawling traffic, I usually knock it over to manual mode. Surely it can't be good for the clutch and the labouring engine?

I've not got the noise unfortunately (only the noise I posted above, do you have that?) but I'd get it into the dealer if you're too worried

How's your MPG? Are you impressed, or not so much?

Yes, this DSG is something else, very special - for the good and the bad.

The sport mode seems to be more responsive tho.

i don't have that noise you're having. did you get it to the dealer yet?

I took mine and they told me it's packed as hell and that i should come back a week later so i will return (customer service in Israel is nasty... especially in the cars industry)

it's just so annoying that a new car should already sit at the garage and that i'd have to figure out what to do without a car till after they fix the issue...

rather than that i'm really enjoying the car. I'm waiting for it to reach 1500KM so i can really test the MPG, but it is already so much better than my sold Kia Picanto!

Just a quick update on my car:
Not had chance to take it into the dealer ref the above mentioned noise yet. It has however stopped since the weather has cooled a little.

A new problem though

It annoys the hell out of my that when I turn the blowers on, it assumes I want the air conditioning on ...I don't!!
I turn it off every time, however it seems to me that my air conditioning is 'always on' whether the A/C light is lit up or not.
On my previous FR I used to get a whistling/rustling sound from my vents when the A/C was on. It annoyed me so much that I hardly used the A/C. The dealers said it was normal when I raised it.

This car does the same when the A/C is on, however I also hear it when the A/C is supposedly off. So, this makes me think that the A/C is always on. Coupled with the fact that the air coming out of the vents is always cold and the windows NEVER steam up when the blowers are on with the A/C off...

Anyone else notice the same?

I also need to take it in at some point due to the DSG. It's become very snappy and extremely difficult to get a smooth start in it. It also seems to have extreme difficulty in changing from first to second gear and gets confused as hell. Sometimes 'slamming' it into second gear. Not a nice feeling. 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th gear are all perfect.

about the gear - 1st to 2nd has never been a problem (i have the car only 4 months tho)
it's acting like a manual of course - so a bit of a shake, but no slams.
