Hi all, I've upgraded this week from a Ibiza SC Copa 1.4 to a Ibiza ST FR 1.4 TSI ACT. So far everything is good , loving the new engine my only question is how do you know when the ACT is active? my travel to work is only one junction so thought the engine is not warm enough to active the ACT but drove around 15-20 mins on the motor way and i still didnt notice anything. should there be a notification light?

One of the claims with this ACT technology is that you can't tell its working - it just does it's job.

I reckon I can feel mine when using ACT, it's the tiniest bit lumpy under low load and then smooths out when I demand a bit more power. The live mpg reading gives a good indication also.

I'll keep an eye on the mpg on my next motorway run. I was just sure the sales man mentioned that light or message would appear when activated.

Can anyone give me a simplified explanation of how the Act actually works? Thanks in advance, Rob.

The way I understand it is that at low revs, the ACT system will shutdown 2 of the 4 cylinders, as soon as the revs hit a certain range all 4 cylinders are used to increase power, once the revs drop again it goes back to 2 cylinders again.

Any idea if its always the same 2 cylinders that are shut, or does it swap between pairs? No idea why I'm asking, just wondering if it would make a long term difference in wear

Go to YouTube and type vw act and you'll see the schematics in action. Basically it shuts the 2 central pistons, it doesn't swap.

Interesting video, is it me or does video seem to show both outside Pistons working harder when in act mode, or you think that is just illustration ?
