hey fellow mk2 leon owners

i have a leon fr tdi pd 170 remapped to a claimed 210bhp by celtic tuning, i dont know if i believe this figure with the dpf still in place but it is quicker

anyway its been 6 weeks since the remap and every now and then the car stutters if i put my foot down, is this normal? it never did it before

my main question is how much did your insurance go up? ive yet to ring my insurance company but i did a quote online on admiral with pretty much the exact same details on the same car and the difference between the quotes was 440 pound :/ just for having a remap

the last thing i want to do is be uninsured when it comes to a crash but i dont know whether to just remove the map, by the time ill have paid the difference i would of spent 700 pounds

Firstly, what made you think posting on a public forum that you had no insurance was a good idea?

To answer your question though. My quote for my S3 went up about £150 with a remap from 265 - 310 bhp.... Try Competition Car Insurance - always worked out best for me but that may be because I'm happy with limited mileage.

Here, here! Many insurance companies watch this site, so beware.

Also: If you can't afford the insurance, - don't mod your car, it's like buying a Ferrari 458 then saying you spent all your money on the car, so can't afford insurance!

You really should have checked this out first.

If it's any help, however, I got a deal with Aviva through 'Need to Insure' brokers that was very good, though I am 45 and also have a restricted mileage deal.

Anyway, give them a try. :)

I think you've mis read. He is insured "yet to ring <b>my<b/> insurance company ". But good advise for any future users.
I think he's just wanting to know how much he can expect his current premium to be raised by.
I dont really understand the situation in regards to remaps and insurance, as I know with some systems it possible to apply your own maps, so you may never be on public roads with remapped software

He's saying that he'll be un-insured if he has to make a claim and the insurers find out about the map that he hasn't told them about which would void his insurance.
I would imagine that insurers don't check for engine mapping on every car that is claimed for, it would cost too much money.
Many garages don't have the equipment to check this so would hardly get checked.

....but on the off chance it does get checked it really isn't a gamble I would take tbh?

I know that I've had remaps in the past, and my insurance didnt go up when I told the insurance company, as it was put down as an improvement of effeciency for the engine. Even if they check for a remap, they wont check what effect it has on the engine.
I think you could go without them ever checking if you had a claim, but at the end of the day is it really worth worrying about whether they'll find it when you do some serious damage to the car, just for the sake of saving a small amount of money

When i had my remap done and tried to get insurance it was hard to find a good deal. A lot of companys now wont touch remapped cars some will only insure up to 10% power increase some 20% , if you get quotes online be sure to read the policy small print when it comes through as one company i tried insured modified cars but when the policy came through the small print read power increase maximum of 10% . I ended up with a policy £600 a year unlimited modifications withought declaring them but im 42 with a full no claims.

He is uninsured full stop...

and car insurance companies will check everything on the car if he has to make a claim after an accident, they have to by law!

But do they..... i know someone.. who had 9 points and lowered springs both of which undeclared to the insurers, crashed, claimed, other person liable, kept 5 years no claims and premium stayed pretty much as is......

well by law they're meant to yes...but as the point is being proven here, whether people abide by that law and the law is another question lol

Exactly, lol. question is, is it worth the risk.... pay extra on your premium or have your insurance voided and be at least 10k out of pocket!

If you were an insurance company and could get out paying ££££ if something were to happen, by getting the ecu checked - wouldn’t you?

You would also get done by the police, for not being insured. Most likely points and a fine.

Don’t understand why people pay lots of money on the car in the first place, then more money on modding, only to have invalid insurance and be driving around illegally.

I struggled last October to find any of the big names that would touch a modified car.

Ended up using Flux and NIG.

I mainly did mine due to DPF problems not the power but now I pay more than I would a standard car with similar specs and can't shop about...

i'd rather declare mods & be happy - why give an Insurance company the ammo to declare your insurance void, particularly if the have to pay out? and losing your motor at the very least...

AndyVTR - did you try site sponsor Chris Knott insurance? They're worth a punt...

Prison would worry me more than losing my car, I'm far too pretty for prison.

I think I did but again couldn't come near. Modding is a mug's game I know but I'd pay less on a 330d.
