Intermittent tail light fault - anyone else had this?

I keep getting a bulb warning light on the dash. The faulty light is one of the rear lights (right hand one of the two on the passenger side of the car).

If you switch the lights on (or if they're already on switch them off then on again) the light works again!

I've replaced the bulb but the problem still occurs at random.

The nature of the problem makes me think it's a computer type fault - does it need the dealer to "reboot it" or am I looking at a big bill for a new part? If anyone's got any experience of this I'd love to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

Intermittent tail light fault

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but a search only brought this and a very similar one up.

Basically this is exactly what's started happening with mine except it's the drivers side rear tail light. Very intermittent and the bulb and holder both seem ok.
Any suggestions other than buy a new bulb holder.

Cheers.......Mad Jock

Just started happening to me also today infact, little bit weird lol

The dash light comes on for the rear driver tail light, then I turned off and on again and all is well...

I put it to Good karma as I let a tractor out...

Mine is doing it, it's the rear passenger side light on the boot lid. The fault light on the dash is up and I'm getting no voltage to the plug at the cluster. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Last time I looked, they didn't. I'm wondering if it's an earth fault at the cluster. I'll have a look at the weekend.

I've had this too, seems if you suffer with condensation in the lamps the bulb holder corrodes up, I used some WD40 and some fine sandpaper to clean the connections and it's been ok since

Buy a new bulb holder it cured my intermittent fault I've had for 6 months....I tried everything and the only thing that cured it was a new holder at £10 cost : )

I had the same problem too. If the system detects a lamp has gone it won't supply a voltage to the lamp until the next time it is turned off and back on again. If for a split second it detects a break in the wire, or even a high resistance it will cut the power to the lamp and the indicator on the dash will come on. So any bad connection will make it look like you have a lamp away.

I thought i heard somewhere that the connector in the boot lid can sometimes be loose causing intermittent fault. Opening and closing the boot probably causing the fault to happen more frequently. Connector needs replacing.

I too have this but only happens when it's cold or wet and even then it's very infrequent, may look at a new buld holder but at the moment doesn't really bother me too much

Sorted it. The rear fog light bulb had gone but for some reason it was causing the lights on the other side of the boot lid to stop working??
The only reason I found it was cause I swapped the bulb holders round to make sure that the holder was working.

All of the bulb holders at the rear have the same plugs, so it's worth swapping them about just to check if the holders are working.

Yeah, no bother. Just unclip the bulb holders from where they are and the plug just pulls out.
Make sure you put the bulb holders back in their correct places afterwards though, although they are interchangeable with the plugs, the operation isn't. Eg, Switching the lights on will operate the fog light and vice versa.
