Does anyone own an ipod compatable stereo in their car and run a non ipod through it or is this not possible?

I want to replace the awful sound of the standard stereo in my LC and am thinking of replacing it with either an ipod stereo or one which takes SD cards.

Any thoughts anyone??

I've got a very nice Alpine, Click below my sig and i have lots of info about it on my Readers cars page.

i have an alpine ida-x001 , which runs an ipod thru the menus but you can also connect a hdd to it if you wish . tried it once but not as nice or as fast as using it with an ipod .

if u can use your non ipod mp3 player as a harddrive then it should work with the alpine

iv got a blaupunkt brisbane that has a wire for a usb stick and an sd card slot a couple of my friends are thinking about ditching the cd players in favour of one of these because it is a lot easier than swapping cd's

i have a JVC, you can burn 4.5 gigs of mp3s to a dvd and load it up in it. along with vids etc.

i also have my ipod connected. its not as good as the alpine searching system but its extra features make up for it.

Have a look at the Pioneer DEH-4100. You can connect an MP3 player (any brand) via its front facing AUX input with a 3.5mm - 3.5mm headphone lead or USB port which also accepts flash drives. If you flip the facia down also, you can shove an SD card in there or a CD with MP3/WMA's on it or just a normal CD. If you want direct iPOD control at a later date, you can also get a cable for that too and feed that through to the glovebox :)

Thanks guys, I think that answers my question - If I want to connect an MP3 player (non ipod) - an aux input is required.
I'm liking the idea of an SD slot as this way, I won't have cable and an MP3 player sitting in the front and having to worry about disconnecting it each time I leave the car for a while.

Now all I need is to find one with red lights!!!

On the alpine ida a aux cable aint required . It plugs into the stereo like you would plug the mp3 player into a computer . You can then browse the files through the stereos screen . Theoretically you could get something like a 250 gb passport harddrive and fill it with songs and leave it in the glovebox connected via usb cable .
Better and easier than a aux input as you dont have to change the songs on the mp3 player you do it all thru the stereo

On my Pioneer all the cables are at the back (ipod, aux) which you just feed into the glove box or wherever, leaving the front bit completely cable free

Mine To . My 80gb ipod lives in the glovebox . It never comes out unless i have a new album to put on it !
