hi guys and girls. Im new to the seat scene and have recently bought a 59 plate cupra tsi 240. i keep hearing about tfsi all the time, is this the same engine? thanks :)

Your guess is as bad as mine mate, I tried a quick google and all I can see is the tfsi is a 2l T fsi and yours is a tsi, it seems to be the way it's written lol and I can't see anything other than a 2l for the T fsi but the tsi seems to come in a few different engine sizes. Yeh I know, it's not the most helpful answer lol, welcome to the site:D

I think the pre face lift fr and cupra was tfsi which was changed for the newer tsi engines in the face lift models yours is i believe the tsi, i have a 07 pre facelift fr which is tfsi hope it helps.

ok, let me have a stab at this. The Pre FL FR and Cupra (FL and Pre-FL) use TSFI engines. The FL FR with the 210bhp GTI engine use TSI engines, but the engine in the cupra hasnt changed.

Now what i cant remember, is that i know the Cupra R is a TSFI thats been mapped a bit etc, and that the Rocco shares the same one, but the Golf R has a higher output and i dont know if thats the newer TSI engine.

Its all very complicated when you think that the new Ibiza Cupra/FR/Polo GTI/Fabia VRS uses a 1.4 Twincharged engine, also called the TSI!?

C'est la vie

To add to the confusion my 08 FR V5 states it is a TSI, when I know it's a TFSI.

Engine code is where it's at.

All just branding changes, TFSI was originally brought in alongside the FSi engines of 1.6 and 2 litre and to denote Turbo from N/A direct injection engines.

With both the N/A FSi engines no longer in production and to reduce the mouthful they reduced it to TSi got rid of the "Fuel" part and make it shorter. Has nothing to do with the the engine just "branding" and still see TFSi used to cause confusion

dont they still do a 1.4 FSI in the leon? and i thought that the Pre-FL FR and FL FR had different engines, like the TDI, and thats why the engine coding was changed?

Nope the 1.4 N/A is not direct injection, yes the pre FL had the EA113 and FL has the EA888, but the higher power EA113 is still used in the Cupra and is called TSi since FL as well. Like I said a branding exercise.

The Golf R engine is the same as the Scirroco R and Cupra R it only has an extra 4Bhp which would be down to the mapping.

"The block is reinforced and the cylinder head replaced, while special pistons, conrods, high-pressure fuel injectors, a new turbo and a more effective intercooler are used to give 265bhp and 345Nm of torque."

tell you what they still do as a FSI engine, the mighty R36, only in CC form and i'd love the 300bhp beast, but C02 and MPG must be terrible!

Yes that is very true forgot that the US Market still had it as well.

the engines are the same in principle , but there are subtle differences between them , turbo part numbers , compression ratios ect but they are in fact very closely related.

The new TSI engines as used in the Fr , golt Gti , variants are different to the Cupra , s3 engines ect they have loast the k03 turbo and now use an IHI unit , also i believe there is no cam belt but a chain , and the fuel pump setup is totally different on which cam and the number of lobes it operates on.
Its just a real shame they didnt upgrade the TFSI engines to use a better IHI turbo , that would have made the cars stand out a lot more for tuning potential.

Don't Audi still use the TFSI branding?

I've noticed there engines sometimes show better mpg and bhp but I guess they are leading the development race so get the new parts first.

So did the rest of the VAG group want to drop the F?

Thought back in he day if the letter I was red in colour it meant something also???

that was the old golf TDI's and GTI's, without a red I meant they were the lower spec engines.

And stuff the mpg and bhp, i could get a A3 Black edition with DSG and Quattro for same Co2 as my Leon without either! Typical VAG hierachy!

The new gen EA888 is a very different engine yes is chain driven and a completely different lump higher pressure injectors as well but the EA113 which was TFSi is now just branded TSi in the Cupra and Golf R but TFSI in the S3? Audi however still us TFSi for all it's turbo petrol engines go figure.

Haha thanks guys! This issue seems to have most people questioning!

Ok so i now no the tfsi and tsi 2.0 cupra are the same engines. Ones pre facelift and the others post.
I have been looking for engine mods and this issue had thrown a spanner in the works for me.

Thanks for the info guys. Gonna go mad modding now!
