Got the old girl serviced & she was making a few funny noises. Turns out theres an issue with the gearbox where it connects with the driveshaft. Leaking gearbox fluid slightly and a few iron filings found upon inspection.
Replacement gearbox recommended & probably a clutch and fly wheel whilst down there! As the cars only worth £4k at the most I've been quoted around £1000 upwards to fix I think ts time to say bye to the old girl.
Bit pissed really as I've had new tyres all round and front brakes last year!

Anyone come across this before, the cars just done 61k as well 1.9tdi

Thanks.

I'd say that's £1k well invested... You won't get much better for the £4k cash value

I'd check out a local VW specialist - I'm sure there used to be one in Nottingham (used to drive past it... can't think where it is now though)

They'll either have a source of supply, or a recommended refurbisher that they use

Yeh spoke to them today, they were talking about £1500 ish which worries me when cars only worth just over double that? Decisions, decisions!

Meant to say last night the problem was in the gearbox that the output shaft near side bearing had collapsed? Just got off the blower to the VW specialist in Lincoln. Who prefer to repair them and give 12 month guarantee as well. Looking at 4 hours labour plus whatever parts needed to repair and they will assess clutch/flywheel to see if need replacing. Also give me 10% discount as I'm in the military.
Used them before and would have had the car checked there but 33 miles away & didn't want to risk it. What do you reckon?

Sounds like a good deal to me

33 Miles is quite a drive, check your breakdown cover & wind the radio up

Rang the breakdown cover & not able to do it :-( ah well £60 it is for the recovery guy to fetch it tomorrow! Might as well finally get the window regulator fixed at the same time & then treat the old girl to some new springs & finally refurb those alloys as she's staying in the family a couple more years at least now :)

My gearbox started leaking and the driver's window reg packed up within a few weeks of one another. I fixed them both myself, the gearbox issue was I think different to yours, the 1.9 has a 5-speed right? It was leaking from an end plate that had corroded through, when I was researching I read that it was because of a worn bearing behind it. The bearing looked ok on mine so I replaced the rusty/holed end plate with a new and got rid. I only got 5K for it (07 sport SE with all the trimmings, engine was on 60k with new cambelt)

A lot of car for the money! Sometimes I regret selling it but I regret selling the PD130 cordoba I had before that even more. I did 50k in it without any issue (from 90 to 140 on the clock)

Not had your Tolly that long Gaz have you?
Yeh it is the 1.9 5 speed. Nothing anywhere near it for the price & mileage on the market. I think the cars a bit like marmite! After this hopefully no more bills apart from interim service before nxt major one then prob get rid before then.
Will keep you all updated (fingers crossed)

I only had it about 6 months in the end. I bought it in October '11 and by April '12 the gearbox was leaking. Fortunately I had another car (my brother's) while I figured out what was up with it and fixed it up. Sold it in June and bought an audi 80 cabriolet running LPG and pocketed the difference. The audi was cheaper to run!

I lost a huge amount of money on it. I had a cheeky scouser come round with £4500 in cash when I had it for sale, it'd cost me over £7k 6 months before. I eventually got 5k for it but I'd had it for sale for almost the full month on ebay before I got that for it.

It was a nice car but I was overall just a bit disappointed with the performance and the fuel economy, I think the gear ratios were too short, it would pull 6th at 35mph. If it'd had a proper eco 6th on there like the cordoba the fuel economy would have been far better. I was looking at replacing the gearbox and It wouldn't have been too expensive, £300 ish for a 2nd hand one and I'd've changed it myself for a taller geared one. If I'd gone down that road I might have kept it and had it in for a remap.

I am a bit useless when it comes to sticking it out with cars. The cordoba is the longest time I've ever had a car (3 and a half years) I get bored too easily. Change of job is around the corner and I'm looking at new toledos now, but there's no good engines anymore. The PD130 has to be one of the best VW engines for me as an all-rounder and I've yet to see a good replacement for it.

Shame, cars are just money pits aren't they! Cheeky bar steward £4500! Well he was a Scouser after all lol:)
Looked into getting a refurb'd box but wary as i know how mamy miles mines done & history etc, plus fixing it is less hassle & hopefully I'll save a few £?? Was expecting mine to be a bit more economical but I get about 45mpg ish when the books all say 55-60! But for me to get more economy would need me to buy a new one and have to pay extra so would Prob be worse off! The 105 tdi is good but even better remap'd. The guys who did it said that's the best engine to remap apparently. Would have loved the 2.0 tdi dsg but reckon that'd be even worse & imagine it'd be a lot more expensive to fix if this happened.

I was getting 57mpg from my cordoba driving it carefully in the summer months on the 40 mile a day commute, the Toledo was doing 42mpg at one point on the same route in winter, when the computer said it was doing 50+ My best average over a tank was 51mpg, and that was mostly a torturous 9 hour drive to and from Colchester to pick up a gearbox for my polo. I'd even taken the back seats out to see how much saving weight helped. It didn't help much at all! My previous best was 50 over a trip to and from portsmouth, with passengers and luggage, it was definitely just not geared properly. Switching the cruise on made the mpg figure on the computer go up but in reality it did the opposite.

I was expecting to get closer to the book figures (combined is 47 for the 2.0 TDI manual) and I guess I managed it sometimes but only by driving at speeds that would annoy most lorry drivers. The book figure on tthe cordoba was 54 and I could match that with relative easy as long as i stayed below 70mph.
