Is my gearbox on the way out?

Bilston.
Hi Fellow sufferers,

My cars been making a rather high resonating whirring noise (highish pitch).

This weekend and subsequently since - when I start the car up and accelerate (not aggressively) into second and then take my foot off the accelerator to allow the gear to roll I get a "chattering" noise... gear stays smooth and doesn't pop out or anything like.

Only seems to happen in second - but I cant hear for engine/road noise in other gears.

Is my box broken... any suggestions what it could be?

Thanks

H

Ok sticking with the basics first.

Mileage and year of car.

Checked gearbox oil level / oil change.

Try sitting at idle and dipping in and out the clutch. Can you hear any rattle.

Normally main and lay shaft gearbox bearings tend to have a deep rumble and sometimes vibrate when worn.

Syncro rings tend to whine in pitch with the rpm.

My fifth gear does this also. I'm going to try replacing the gearbox oil first, seeing as I don't use fifth a huge amount I'm not too bothered. However I suppose second gear you have to use a lot, probably just worn gear syncros

right then chaps.

its a 1.9tdi, 2006 its done 70,000 miles.

Gearbox oil level? (how would i check this - i have willing if not the know how).

Idle nothing, it only seems to be in 2nd and perhaps 3rd when rolling in gear - i have no doubt synchro for 5th has gone because its very "acoustic" when in gear clutch down doesn't make a noise.

the rattle only happens when the engine is cold or has sat for a while.

Hope this helps.

Gearbox oil seems to be a pain to check as it's meant to be level with the filler hole I believe? So it'll either make a mess or it'll be near impossible to see how much you have.

If the gearbox is one of those fill to level jobs then it can be messy. I have done them though. You open the side plug and push in the flex tube on the end of the oil bottle in and squeeze till it dribbles out.

So you have noise in 3 gears ?

Any major rocking or play on the gear lever if you boot it and back off ?

You really need to get the oil level checked asap and go from there.

Theres nothing noticeable about gear changes dead spots or shiifter movement/play.

Its mostly when cold it gets a little noisy, after a drive its just a humming noise from the gear which matches RPMs.

I'm just looking for a gear box centre around the Wolverhampton area.. :(

Thanks

Hi all sorry to necro this thread but ive been to a couple of independant garages and have come out witht he a few answers all of which say - replace/repair the box costing betwee 300 and 1000 pounds.

But i'm not overly convinced anymore and wanted another opinion.

Heres what i have.

In second gear when over running (say 15 mph witht he foot off the acelerator) i get a chatter/clatter noise - usually when its cold (but not always).

When the car is running in gear up to speed there is a very audible whine noise the generally matches the speed - this noise stops when you accelerate and when you dip the clutch.

What i have found to be strange is that when i get the car up to speed and put it into neutral lift the clutch - no noise - is tis key?

Basically is this the box or is it the clutch/clutch release bearing/pressure plate - insert drive chain here...

Thanks

Would you say the biting point is close to the floor? Or feels like it changes from mid point to low?

I recently had a problem of mainshaft axial play which causes gearbox whines and luckily, with our Ibiza models, the fix is simple and cheap (£12).

The whine is usually heard in 3rd when slowing down in gear (similar to your experience)

It may not solve for your issue, but it's a cheap way to see - http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...tch-disengagement-issues-mainshaft-axial-play

The bite hasn't moved an inch. Plus im not getting any jumping of gears or any movement either.

It sounds like a knackered washing machine sometimes :( other times its fairly quiet.

Clutch and DMF was done about 2 years ago.

Not too long after that i started to have the odd (5th gear mostly) noise from the box but this paired with the fact that i very rarely use 5th cast it to the back of my mind.

Its always hard trusty a independent garage (even on recommendation) as there always seems to be a lot of umming and arrring when it comes to the diagnosis.

no oil change has been done.

i'll try and record the sound but i only have my phone doubt thats going to prove worthwhile.

Appriciate your help badger mate.

Oh and to correct myself - the noise (whirring/whine) is only when accelerating in any gear (not sure on first as im not there long enough) but only on acceleration. Gas off noise stops cluth down noise stops in neutral moving no noise.

thanks again/.

Does the engine whine when decelerating, clutch in and back out in the same gear?

Does it whine when in neutral and revving at all? Clutch in or out?
