So, I was just looking at my previous Readers Ride thread and i started it in 2007!? How time flies, Conscious i am only meant to have one but this is a build thread so admin please feel free to delete the old one.

The Cupra served well as a road car for a long time. Last year though i bought a new road car and this thread is to document what is now happening with the Cupra.

The aim is a high quality track car that can eventually be adapted with a few more tweeks (fuel tank etc) to race if i can afford it. For now though, its got to stay road legal and will be used for track days.

Its going to be a long process as I hate doing things by halves and so haven't set a budget. I would rather it takes twice as long but is done right then rushed on a shoe string.

I am going to be trying to do the majority of the build myself with a little help from friends, i am fairly mechanically/practically minded and feel i can learn what i don't know.

So anyway here we go...

This is the replacement road car with the Cupra in road trim... Here its running (or should have been was was a little sick) 275hp with 280 ft lbs torque. The target is to get that up over 300 now its not a daily driver.

Stripping commenced

Something tells me the roof lining has been off before...

Front end started to be dismantled and tucked away in what became a far too small garage

Dash out... this will be flocked and a custom switch panel going in place for the climate control, the beginnings of which are pictured also

Carbon fibre panel will be made to sit in here

Battery gone... boot bound!

But then... i decided the garage just wasn't big or light enough so moved on to another one a foot or so wider

Engine out next once i have a stand, con rods, new sump, head work, everything cleaned, re painted and looking new.

Theres so so much to do even besides the engine with new coily's, my OCD wanting to repaint or replace all the wishbones etc, cage, seats, batter re-loco, washer bottle re-loco, new brakes, wheels tyres, wider track... it goes on and on! Like i said... not by halves... I want it to look as good as new as possible and perform like a race car...

check back for updates, or subscribe of course ;)

So only a small update for the Cupra this week as didnt have much spare time due to needing to do a valve adjustment on the S2000 as well...

So just took the carbon canister out

As mentioned the whole bay will be cleaned so dont panic about the dirt. Also need to fabricate something to cover that hole or part of it, the arch liners are long gone but dont really want a bay full or dirt from the road.

The onto the main taks of the day, a valve adjustment on the S2000

Started off so well

At this point the prudent thing to do is check the valve retainers as on the early F20 lumps they where prone to cracking if the engine is mechanically over revved. Whilst i know i have never done this i wasn't the first owner, far from it, and these things can take years to manifest, then one day, pop, a valves dropped and you need a new motor.

Glad i checked, at least 2 cracked that i could see one of which is pretty bad and near to being terminal i'd say. So, i now have tow cars off the road until Tuesday when i have the Honda booked in at a local specialist for new retainers.

Annual Bonus... SPENT

Yeah, it's a great daily mate. Drive it all year round. Rear as standard on the early ones like mine is a bit snappy, particularly in the wet, but that can be sorted with decent tyres and geo. The old 'lack or torque' thing isn't that bad to be fair bits just a 2.0l NA, no worse than any others just with the added benefit of VTEC when you really wanna drive it. I've been unlucky in a few bits cost wise but that's always a risk you take buying 2nd hand. I consider myself proficient enough to deal with 'most' things so doesn't worry me.

Dropping a valve however does lol and I haven't got the luxury of taking my time doing it as need it for work so have booked it in :)
