My 2001 Toledo Tdi makes a knocking sound when moving off. The sound is a softish knock rather than a harsh thud (if you get my meaning) i thought it was one of the lower wishbone bushings but as i've just had these repalced i suspect the engine mounts have gone. Could this sound be the engine rocking backwards and forwards until the momementum keeps it back?

I tend to drive the car quite hard, it is fitted with a full Bilstein suspension and had uprated Black Diamond discs and pads at the front. Recently i have found the car to be torque steering an awful lot and unstable under heavy breaking?

Is this a common problem?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated

could be the shocks [even the mounts] gone,,, the engine mounts,,, or,,, does this happen when you're cornering or even with the steering wheel on straight position?

btw, where ya from?

The knocking sound only appears when moving off from a stationary position, happens going forwards or in reverse. it dosen't sound when cornering or in a straight line.

I'm from Omagh, Co Tyrone in Ireland. Our roads tend to be in a worse condition than those in England so as a consequence suspension problems and other problems arise more quickly than in cars that spend their lives in the rest of the UK.

hi i have the same problem i think but only in 1st and 2nd low reves give it a few revs say 1500 or more and it goes away, or be very slow or gentle at pulling away and it goes to?. just had me cam belt done by local vw specialists whitch is when it started over night (you know the story it was not there when i dropped it off but is now and they have nothing to do with it!!!!!) and they say there is nothing that can cuse the noise i have replaced both front suspention arms and ball joints and anti role bar bushes and the driver side engine mount and the noise is still there
