some may say lala land....
hello,
lately, couple of months, i've started to notice that the car is getting more laboured when i try to go over 3k, in fact struggles in about 3rd, 4th or 5th, that i've got in habit of always changing at 3k now.

occasionally when i gone round a nice 2nd gear bend on way home, i boot it round to 4k it dumps so much black smoke i can see it for a clear 1/2 mile down the road. this is only time i get to see 4k and the pull is even all the way round.

always try and wait till about 10miles/15min before i try and use hard throtlle otherwise i change at approx 1500 until then

i have no lights appear on dash at any time
she is coming up to 90k service so will get fuel filter done at same time
had new glow plugs & harness approx 10k ago now
had mot in june and new top mount bushes were replaced as worn
nothing else ha been done or needed to be done

i have shareware vag-com to log, if only i knew how or what for. and then i wouldn't know what would be right/wrong or good/bad

any pointers, thought appreciated

[edit]
idiot alert, but still an issue
corrected the gears in use, after drive to work this morning

You could look at requested boost versus actual and I am sure you will find actual less than requested. If this is the case it could be a number of things but a starting point is boost leaks.
Is your car mapped/running hybrid etc?

cheers glynnd,
car is totally standard; no remap or anything

if the weather holds off will check all hoses and will try and work out vag-com logging - now all i need is the battery to last long enough to be off use...

2'nd gear suggests you just slowed down hence not using much jooc-- then boot and smoke sounds like there is, maybe is fuel starvation, again if it's due 90K and been done by the book, someone may consider the filter changed @80K and not needed, unless you know it was changed make sure it's done and see how it goes I have been charged for a filter which I'm sure was never changed as it wasn't due but was still charged_Nissan

was windy in oswestry at work as well
nice pub, especially in the summer.

never seen fuel filter on a receipt and always been done at a seat dealership - no nearby vag specialist and not enough confidence to do myself.
not sure i understand you fully with the first line:

the 2nd gear is off A road onto a B road, with nice straight for about a mile, so yes slow down to go round junction then boot it
it goes round to 4k most times all ok, and yep enough smoke to hide in!

well unless you were -say- going full throttle uphill you wouldn't be using that much jooc, if the filter were blocked-partly the pump would have chance to catch up and provide enough for the greater consumption needed in higher gears- upping the presure to the injectors allowing it to smoke for the first (call) ie; higher power required-- in theory:D

right
checked all hoses and no splits
boost hose, (i think), at bottom left as face car is all ok with only oil/liquid deposit -> no idea how much is too much or not enough but seemed firmly attached
listened to engine with neighbour while gf revved her - no hissing or pipe bulges anywhere

looked at vag-com - no errors (more a double sanity than anything)
can only check up to group / bank 24 as shareware
when want to look at bank 115 says i need to register for full version
how did:
open vag-com
selected 'select control module'
select engine -01
went through each group and it stops at 25, will not allow me to enter anything higher with saying i need to register
tried engineII & engineIII and same outcome

so unless, i can meet anyone with full vag-com to check will have to leave with the garage
can't afford to purchase full vag but may come to it

ecu rest seemed to help but not for long, couple of trips to work which is a-road and some dual carriage-way and mainly sit at 1500rpm 80% of way which is approx 53mph

right, looking at removing and cleaning egr over weekend and see if that helps
service booked and they will do fuel filter as well
