Lane Assist - Is it any good?

Hi,

Is the Lane Assist / Adaptive Cruise Control any good on the Formentor?

I'm currently driving a Volvo V90 and the Pilot Assist (which is basically combined Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control) is fantastic for motorway driving - other than changing lanes it pretty much drives itself. Are the assistant systems on the Formentor this good?

I know Lane Assist is enabled each time the car is started and that it can cause issues in certain scenarios (I've read @Agnes.Surrey 's) comments on this. But I'm wondering if it's any good on well marked roads such as motorways with no roadworks?

I used it in anger for the first time last week going to Devon on motorways and it's pretty spot on. I wouldn't say it's perfect and you still need to keep an eye on it but it definitely helps.

It's good on motorway and decent roads with good markings. Just have to keep your hand on a wheel. It's called Travel Assist in VAG. There's button on steering wheel.

Seriously?

Very helpful, I hadn't realised that VAG differentiated between Lane Assist and Travel Assist. After searching for Travel Assist and doing some reading / watching some videos it seems that Travel Assist is the VAG equivalent to Volvo's Pilot Assist.

Thanks for the help!

Lane Assist is needed for Travel Assist and it works fine then, because it keeps you between the lines, as required and you switch on Travel Assist yourself, when you want to use it.

My complaints were about lane assists on its own, when it can try to throw a car into pothole or onto cyclist, when you don't use indicators, etc. And another person complained about being thrown into oncoming traffic.

There are certainly some videos on YT, I think mostly from Golf. One of them helped me to understand how it works and when to use it.

How nice would it be if the names of these systems was standardised across brands?

Cupra don't even stick to one name, the Formentor owner's manual has a section for "Driving Assist (Travel Assist)". I guess that Travel Assist is the VAG branding but that Cupra then rebrand it to Driving Assist but still include Travel Assist in brackets as even they know how pointlessly confusing it is.

Travel Assist is brilliant on the motorway, leagues ahead of my Leaf’s “ProPilot” or whatever it’s called.

It can take on fairly sharp bends accurately, without bouncing between the lines like the crappier systems do.

That's good to hear. I use the Volvo Pilot Assist system a lot on long journeys, it sounds like the Cupra system might be similar.

I also find it immediately detects road markings and starts operating, and continues to operate even with significant breaks/faded areas in the road markings. By contrast the Leaf’s system takes ages to start (10+ seconds) and it will just give up quickly if the marking quality isn’t near perfect.

I read a bit about the Bosch sensors & camera these latest VWs use and it’s very clever stuff. Lots of artificial intelligence and it utilises several parallel algorithms to determine the specific road conditions and detecting pedestrians, vehicles, all sorts of obstacles, etc.

Good Afternoon All, I loath the lane assist. The first few days were quite colourful with the car. We live on a single track country lane. As you can imagine, there are some curves, mind a tree with a sharp(ish) turn, and the car just wants to fight you. Now, I’m not new to lane assist; I have it in my Golf GTE Hybrid ( work car, tax dodge ) and in that, you can turn it off, and it stays off. My wife and I joke about the Formentor with the pre-flight checks, etc. We love the car; also, no one really knows what it is.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you're used to Pilot Assist, I would not expect the same thing in the Formentor. I drive an XC90 for work, and that system is one of the best when it comes to autonomous driving. The Pilot Assist runs both the lane assist and ACC in perfect harmony.

The lane assist feature in particular is much better in Volvo cars, I find it reads almost every road but this isn't the case in the Formentor; and whilst it's better than some other systems I've used, it's nowhere as good as Volvo's.

Oh well, at least I know what to expect now. It's good to hear from somebody who has experience with both.
