Evening All,

Have sent pics of my mashup multispokes to a few places for pricing on refurb etc and Chris down at wheels like new recommended on here came back with this.....

Hi! Claire, regarding your alloys. They have been laser-cut in the past, but, by the look of them they cant be done again, because of the corrosion. They can be painted, which lasts much longer and looks just as good. Cost £50 each, no vat.

I have no idea what this means:redface:can anyone explain and whats best powder coating or painting as powder coating seems to be the norm??? Don't wanna get ripped off by anyone so need to know whats the best scenario...

Laser cutting is only possible on flat sheet metal, with steel only upto about 12mm thick. Then with thicker material you have to use Water cutting. As for your wheels, he may be on the blag hear with you??? Is he PLASMA cutting out a corroded section of your wheel and rewelding in a new piece? (if so £50 is probably not enough) Or does he mean Die Cut? which is what is applied to the front face of the Silver Ronal Seat alloys to give it that texture in the metal? (which would be difficult to do again as the whell has to run pretty true to achieve a uniform appearance)
Either way you should clarify what the hell he is talking about. Cheapest option would be to get them sprayed, if thats all he is doing, £50 + VAT is really expensive and unfortunately he may have added the infamous 'Girl tax' be 'ballsey' and say ok mate, just spray them for £35 cash per corner, or even better 'Here, £125 cash just spray them all please' something like that - goodluck!

Cheers Greg, they all need doing plus poss another set and others so am looking for discount anyway but didn't understand what the hell this was never heard it before with rims....one of the guys on here used him and said he was good so wanted someone recommended but ???? No girl tax for me i think! they need complete refurb as well so £50 not bad i thought but what are the pros n cons of powder coat vs paint jobs??

powder coating is more hardwearing and would probably last longer, but its more expensive and still wouldnt survive a kerbing which is the main way wheels get damaged anway, i have painted wheels, they look great. If he is good and its a full refurb, £50 is pretty good, all depends on condition, i though he meant he was simply spraying a damaged wheel!

seems about the norm for the refurb and doing in white, don't mind paying but don't wanna get ripped off n have it peeling whatever in 6mths,here's the pics of my rims below so everyone can see what he means????

just looks like lacquer peel on those wheels.

Paint = glossier, but not stone chip friendly
poweder coated - less gloss, but harder wearing.

my porka wheels were painted silver if you remember them, they did about 4k miles and still looked fine.

Laser cutting :lol::lol::lol::lol:

The man's trying it on tell him to f*ck off, as Greg said you can only really cut flat surfaces with Lasers (I should know my Dad's built and fixed the things for 22 years) and even then why the feck would you used one on a wheel doesn't make sense, wheels are generally sanded then acid dipped to bring them back to bare metal before reapirs and powdercoating/spraying are done!!

If he can't spot laquer oxidation then I ain't trusting him with my wheels I can tell you that for nothing!

superb choice of words grayboy! :D

you can take the boy out of Essex.......

I just hate it when these sort of pri*ks think the can use bull to rip off women (well anyone actually) and ruin it for the rest of the boys and girls out there trying to earn an honest living!

Good thing I've got no wheels at the mo or I'd be down there nicking every 10mm spanner & wrench then see how far he gets tomorrow!

powder coating is definitely the way forward, it is sprayed on as a powder then baked in an oven, thus giving a much harder wearing surface. you can specify whether you want a gloss, satin or matt finish.

I can't believe he really means laser cutting, unless he is taking the piss.
