I went to drive to the station this morning and 5 minutes into my journey the car beeped at me and the orange oil light came on. I immediately turned around and left the car at home incase I was to do any serious damage. When I got home, I checked the oil and it barely (if at all) registered on the dipstick, not good at all! The oil was topped up by a garage last month so I can't understand why it's lost so much oil! My fault for not checking it....

So am I likely to have done any damage to the car? I have the car booked in for a service at AMD Essex next Friday but was hoping I could buy some oil to top it up in the mean time.

The car sounds fine, infact I had to move it off my driveway so my girlfriend could give me a lift to the station and the oil light didn't come on that time. The only noticeable different was a slight flatspot at around 2k revs when I was driving it this morning/last night.

Thanks, just wanted confirmation. To be honest I didn't have time to check the manual as I was already an hour late for work due to the problems!

The car is at home and i'll be topping the oil up before the service tomorrow night. Hoping no damage has been done!

Some say there is a oil level sensor on the leons. but ive seen many will oil that does not register on the dipstick at all and no light has come on.
So its either oil pressure or that the oil level really is very very low.

The question is where is the oil going. If you had it topped up not long ago and it was indeed topped up then im sure its a leak rather than going through the engine as you would be very smokey to lose that much in such a short time.
(why you need a garage to top up oil im not sure, how often do you check it? did you check if after they topped it up?)

Check the oil filter for leaks, then check around for any other signs, and check the sump area. Easily knocked.

When was the last time an oil change was done?

Faulty oil sensor, I have the same problem.
Show up in VAG-Com as "oil pressure/temperature/level sensor, shorted or open"

Will replace it soon.
Where do I find the sensor , anyone please ?

Oil level/temperature warning sensor is in the bottom of the sump.

Oil pressure is in the oil filter mounting.

any update on this?

No no no
if you read the maunal that light is to tell you your oil is dangerously low not getting low!!

I thought that was the red light? Then oil light can be orange or red - would orange not mean 'it needs topping up' and red means 'its dangerously low'

id imagine that the red light is low oil pressure and orange means oil level.

However, i have been many leons where the oil level is so low it doesnt even register on the dip stick, (some it took 2 litres of oil to get the oil to the correct level! Yet the orange light had not been illuminated.
So IMO the oil level has to be dangerously low to illuminate the orange light.
Therefore its not ok to drive until the orange light comes on as you should have topped it up way before this happens.

i had no visable oil on the dipstick without any lights showing... i wouldnt trust it. regularly check the level if you think your loosing oil

I had the orange check oil light come on mine a couple of years ago and it didn't even take a full top up bottle to register in the middle of the dipstick.
But i wouldn't count on a sensor to tell you when to top up.

Not all Leons/Toledos have the oil level/temperature sensor fitted, which is one reason why it's indication is so vague. All cars have the oil pressure sensor, and if that triggers you are in serious trouble. so a red indication is appropriate. It means stop the engine now if you want to avoid serious damage.

The oil level/temp sensor in the sump is warning of a slightly less serious condition, you should still stop and find out what has gone wrong (e.g. are you losing oil from a broken pipe or something) but you can usually carry on until the next opportunity to buy some oil. I think the level/temp sensor is meant for cars with long-life serviceing, which might go two years without a garage service.

So the sump sensor has level AND temperature ?!

Can I hook a oil temp gauge to that ?
Cause with my A-pillar pod gauge I got a seperate sensor ?! ...

Yes, but as far as I can tell the sensor is just a tripwire - output goes high IF oil level drops below a preset level OR oil temperature exceeds a preset limit.

Can I hook a oil temp gauge to that ?

I don't think so.

Just sounds like to me that the oil was never topped up by the garage in the first place! another reason never to trust a garage. its good if you know what to do yourself. its not difficult to check your oil and top up. i would top it up again and keep a very close eye on the level

oil level sensor

Hi can anyone tell me if my car has a oil level sensor i need to change the coil pack loom the reg plate is KF52nsk.

Thats if it is the loom.

When the car is driven hard it develops a rough idle ive changed the coil packs , plugs, fuel filter and ran redex injector cleaner but it still does it.

Cheers

Phil.

I haven't done a diagnostics yet but I had a faulty coil pack which is why I changed all the pack's and plugs but looking at the loom its all brittle looking and two of the clips are broken tgst attatch to the coil packs and its only when its driven hard and the morning after being driven hard it nearly stalls on the secondary induction
