Leon Fr DSG 07 Brake Noise / replacement wing mirror

I brought a Leon FR DSG in 0ctober 10 on a 07 plate..........to say its been a bit of a dog so far is an understatement.

The most recent issue is that when I hit the brakes at slow speed I get a noise coming from the drivers side that can be anything from a light "click" to, a thud (although not a heavy one) It appears to only happen at very slow speed, i.3 braking to a stop at traffic lights. There are no warning lights on and nothing else to indicate a problem. To be clear the quicker I go, the more likely the noise is to not be herd. I nearly took the car into Seat today but they wanted £80 just to look at it........

I suspect its a pad being lose of a clip or similar, but really don't know, does anyone else have an idea ?

Also just noticed the plastic on the passenger side wing mirror is badly damaged (someone has clearly hit the car in the last few days) how hard is it to replace a wing mirror and how much is it likely to cost....

The car so far has been a bit of an expense (despite being under warranty)

Also....noticed that sometimes its hard work gettng the car out of parked. Its a DSG gearbox, sometimes just seems stuck in park, usually when been sitting on the drive overnight, but has happened other times

and also, am I due a Cambelt soon. The car is 3.5 years old with 29880 on the clock....

so so many worries with this car.........and to think I brought from a car show room to have a hassle free year of motoring.

thanks all

brought is to bring as bought is to buy.

Just because you "bought" a car from a dealers show room, doesn't mean it's going to be trouble free. It was a second hand car so there was a reason why the previous owner wanted rid of it. When buying a second hand car it is your job to work out what this reason was. Did you get the car inspected by the AA before you handed over your bundle of hard earned cash or did you just think "that's a nice colour, I'll take it"? So many people buy cars with easy to spot issues and then slag off the brand

A reasonable point made, if a bit heavy handed with the delivery of point made !

Always wanted a Leon FR, after 3 years of first time fatherhood, I could finally afford to get one last October. I shopped around and around for about 6 weeks and decided on this one as it was £10,000 and was available from a Main Dealer with an RAC Warranty. It was the safest choice possible given the state of the used car market, which you never know what your going to get.......

I am well aware of the problems inherited when buying used, but sadly thats all I could afford to do. The protection from buying for a dealer has been non existant. They have been awful...and the RAC platinum warranty is pointless as it does not cover wear and tear or diagonstics, which is understandable. But 3 months after a major pre sale service "wear and tear" should not be an issue, but it is.......

If I can work out what this "clicking / thudding" is it will help me decide if I need to cut my losses and sell or should just go with it.

all said and done, harsh ride aside, its a very nice car (if it fcuking works ! )

bought........noted

and slagging off the brand I was not. I spent 3 years saving to buy a Leon. Would buy another one no problem as well, but this one has issues and I hoped someone would be able to offer advice, not scarcasm:(

The noise from the front at low speed could be to do with the pads moving within the caliper. I think some none genuine pads are not the correct size and can cause this. There is a chance that the noise is from worn drop links. These are the small rods with a bushing at each end that connect the anti roll bar to the control arm. clicky Grab hold of them and give them a good waggle, if there is any ticking or clicking when you waggle them they are fooked.

i have changed my pads for ferodos and they make a banging clunking noise at slow speeds so i wouldnt worry about that. do check what nath said though.

Also you aware your DSG gearbox is due a service at 4 years aswell? mines coming up for the cambelt and DSG service in march.

I didn't think that the DSG gearbox service had a time limit on it and that it just needed its first service at 40k miles?

For the price of the DSG service get it done. Four year old oil in a precision bit of kit can't do it any favours.

Think Awesome did mine for £150 odd last year. It gets new oil and filter.

It appears to be the Gearbox !!

I took the car to a brakes specialist on Friday, they checked pads and discs - all fine. Lifted up the car and spun the wheels and the clicking noise appears to be coming from the gearbox. I stood underneath the gearbox area and low and behold the noise was from there......

since Friday, I have done a search on gearbox problems with clicking noises at low speeds and got this.........the symptoms are 100% as I have them......

"DSG Gearbox Click/Clunk 3rd-2nd
Hi guys,

I recently picked up a second had Golf TDI about a week ago. All week I've been enjoying driving the Golf and so far I'm really enjoying the DSG and diesel combination!

Last night driving home I noticed something different to what was normally happening. So far the gearbox has been smooth, silky and changes without so much as making a peep.

Last night however, when I was slowing down, I noticed a slight clunk as the car was downshifting from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes from 2nd to 1st when coming to a complete stop.

I took it out for a drive again today (after emptying my boot, as I thought it may have been my tools rolling around) and it does it intermittently. It still feels smooth to drive and doesn't lag, shudder, hesitate, or anything like that, but the slight clunk can be felt through the floor of the car and doesn't seem right. It definitely hasn't done this before, well at least in the week that I've owned the car and the couple of times I test drove it before.

I'm really nervous now, as this car is a 2006 model, so out of warranty, and everywhere I read it suggests that a clunk in the gearbox is a sign of the DSG failing which = $$$$'s

It's done around 71,000kms and has always been dealer serviced. I also made sure that it had the 60,000km DSG service, where they changed the gearbox oil etc " - end

would be interested in any opinions. The noise from my DSG is the click/clunk when coming to a stop, so appears to be either when the gear disengages or comes from 2 to 3.

many thanks in advance for any views.

(no comments on grammar or spelling needed thanks ! )

Mine used to clunk, had the mechatronics replaced under warranty for other symptoms and they went away.

It's most likely the mechatronics brain causing these noises but a DSG service can't hurt.

ya i agree it probably is but its not cheap to replace... and seat wouldnt do anything about it while i was under warranty so will have to live with it... its fine in manual mode!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh

according to Seat - its simply after market pads not being the right size for the car !

So what to do now, they wanted £300 for front and rear pads fitted.........can I do this myself and obtain the parts from somewhere at a fraction of the cost ?

the car is a Leon 2 FR DSG 2007

thanks

Hmm. May be correct but it'd be a cheap fix...

Yes you can change them if you know what you're doing. As you've asked, i'd get a garage to change as brakes are important!

Either way, get a quote for some OEM pads from Dave @ sere motors in his section as they'll be a lot cheaper. Or use GSF. Investigate disc condition as well as it may make sense to do all at same time.
