Leon FR tdi 2.0 Turbo Noise

Hi folks. I've just bought a Leon FR tdi on a 57 plate which I'm happy with but have noticed a faint scream (best description I can think of!) type noise coming from the engine when accelerating in 4th gear from about 2000rpm. It seems to be when the turbo comes in but it isn't the usual faint whistiling noise of petrol turbos that I remember from years ago.

If you're travelling at a steady 2000rpm in 4th and floor the accelerator it will do it. It doesn't seem to lack power or run roughly.

Is it normal for the turbo to make a noise or should I take it in for it to be checked.

Thanks for any help or suggestions

It's done 6200 miles. I've only done about 600 miles in it. I'm not sure if the noise was there when I bought it.

ahh ... nah .. it'll always will of been there, its just that you've now focused your hearing, and now you heard it once, you keep listening for it :)

I only noticed a "whine" about 3K ago in mine, but my missus swears its always been there, and she heard it right at the begining.

Of course, if your worried - the SEAT garage is the only thing which will be able to calm your fears

yeh - you're probably right - once you hear a noise you listen out for it!

Just had mine mapped and I've just noticed the same although it seems like a bit of a burble than any thing else. More so pulling low down in 4th. Now I've heard it, i'm always listening for it.

Probably not the turbo I can hear, thinks it's just the grumble of the diesel engine that I'm not used to.

A techie from my local dealer just came for quick drive and thinks it's a seal on it's way out on a boost or vacuum hose

Apparently VAG seals weap oil, on pretty much everything, and obviously this makes them perish. Booked in on Monday for a proper investigation

Mine sounds a lot like a siren in the distance! Kept looking around for the blue flashing lights untill I got used to the noise!

Sounds normal to me, never worried about it

If the sound is like in the folowing links it could be on it's way out.

Mine started making this noise at about 30.000 km and was changed under waranty. I know another 3 people that got the cars in about the same month as i did and all of them changed the turbo sooner or later.

Mine has a PD BMN 170 PS engine and was delivered in january 2008.

The strange thing is that the car performed exactly the same as before the whining. All the log i did myself with VAG COM and those made by the dealer were perfect.
