Ive currently got a MK V Golf GT TDi 3dr - Had Leon FR TDi before Golf but had to sell due to divorce. I now need a 5dr and am swaying back to the Leon. Anyone got any opinions as to wether the the Leon or the MK V Golf is better. Certainly get more standard kit in the Leon but my golf has the dual zone climate and a centre arm rest and auto lights and wipers. Cant find a decent 5dr Golf but I still love the Leon. Any opinions received greatly appreciated.

Me neither!

The Golf is a Mk V and the Leon is a Golf Mk IV in effect. On paper the golf is better to drive and has a better quality interior. The Leon has a far better exterior in my opinion though.

It depends how highly you rate looks. I rate it pretty highly personally.

I loved my old Leon. I wouldnt have sold but I had to. I do like the solid feel of the Golf though. Still cant decide!

Ive had a MKV in R32 guise and now a LCR - Difference is there but in terms of value for money the LCR is superb.

If I was you I would hold on and go for a MK2 leon once prices lower.

Looking on Autotrader you can do a straight swap with the same engine:

Golf Mk V GT TDI 65k miles = £7900, 113k miles = £5000

Leon Mk II 2.0 TDI 75k miles = £6200, 107k miles = £5700

Whilst it's not quite the same comparison, I have a 51 plate Leon Cupra mark 1 and the misses has a 1997 Diesel mark IV golf. Previous to my Leon I had a 56 plate Skoda Octavia diesel so I've driven the VAG diesel 1.9 engine quite a bit too.

Very similar as your imagine in some areas, but the Leon does look a bit smarter in my mind both internally and externally. As a performance comparison I did look at some the v6 2.8 petrol 4 motion mark IV golfs and the bog standard 1.8 GTIs as I was looking at the Leon and all I could think of when I was in there 'old mans car'...the walnut effect gear stick was almost enough to make me feel that!

The golf certainly has a very very solid feel to it, and suspension was is a lot more forgiving, especially on the rural roads I'm used to! but the Leon really feels so much more spritely it stole my heart!

I also need the car with the most spacious feel in the back. MK V Golf seems to have quite large rear windows where as the MK II Leon seeks to have smaller rear windows. Mk I Leon is somewhere in between. I think I need to look at both Leons.

the mk2 leon tdi is a good buy lots of space in the back for passengers but the main thing to look out for with regards to the interior is the complete lack of storage space. I love our sport ref tdi to bits fantastic car good on long journeys, comfortable, frugal with the go go juice even when you give it a hammer, but the fact i have nowere to store cds in the car drives me nuts. it's like seat looked at it said "si lets make the car pretty but at the same time lets make the interior really really impractical" my only gripe about the mk2 leon other then that leon over golf anyday.

Space wise in the mark IV golf I think personally has a little more in the back, not masses but a few inches.

I seem to have less room in the back in my current mk1 Leon as I have the leather seats and they seem a bit deeper than the cloth ones I used to.

Boot wise again I think the golf has a bit more room but it's not hugely different as far as I've noticed.

I'm sorry but how can you look at a car like speedinsaxo's and not want one!

Its is beautiful!

Been and looked at a MK I Leon, Mk V Golf and MK II Leon, all 5 door. Golf had most space in the back and felt more spacious. By that I mean the shape of the roof and shape of the windows (My mam has panic attacks in my 3dr golf hence the reason I need a 5dr). Only problem now is finding something.

McMaddy please do yourself a favour dont touch a Leon TDI they are crap especially the 110bhp one! let me explain the golf and leon inherited a well know problem on VNT turbo's they clogg up! yes you can hammer round like the proverbial TW*T, to keep the turbo clear but with diesel costing 1.35 per litre its defo not the way to go.
Mines had a turbo clean by dealer around £500 and a new turbo around £900 and all for less than 54,000 miles heck thats a crap car so far as I am concerned, just type in "limp mode" or "clean turbo" and look to see how many, yes i know this is a forum that people use to get answers to problems so you only expect to see problems here but no mate keep well away from the TDI they just aint worth it.
