Looking at used Leon FR 170 TDi

Hi,

I am new here, and wondered if you guys could help?
I am looking at buying a used (2006/07) Leon FR TDi 170. It is a toss up between this and the Golf GT TDi 170.
I really like the Leon, and it comes with so much more "exras" than the Golf, but my OH, really likes the Golf, so have decided to do some research in costs of running etc.

They both seem pretty much the same when you look at MPG and BHP etc (also tax/insurance is equal)

What sort of things should I look out for when looking at used Leons? Are there any known issues that crop up... please be honest!! Cambelts seem to be mentioned in a lot of adverts on quite young/low mileage cars, any issues with these?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, as I viewed a Leon the other week, and I am really loving the idea of owning one, but after selling my Scooby, which cost me a lot of money over the last 2 years, I really could do with a car that happily trundels along with just the yearly servicing required!

Only well known problem with Both of these cars are the DPF (Diesel Particle Filter)


The reason why they seem the same is they are the same car, Both have same Chasis and Both have the same BMN PD170 Engine only diffference is the Badge and Shape

If I am honest the Golf maybe the better bet the FR has very hard suspension which is not to all tastes and your OH may well find it too hard. Leon does have a better spec and is a more stylish looking car. As said above they are both mechanically and electrically pretty much the same. Go for a good test drive in both.

Thanks for the replies. After owning a Scooby for the last 5 years, hard suspension is not too much of a problem.

I know the Leon and Golf are pretty much the same car, but wondered what costs what for parts etc? Is the VW going to be more costly for parts than the Seat?

Not sure on used prices but, there is around 4k difference on new prices.

I have approx. 8.5k to spend. I would get more on the Leon than I would on the Golf (ipod, multi func. steering wheel etc) and the Golf would be 2005/06 and the Leon 2006/07.

I was more concerned about repairs costs, servicing, common faults etc.
After owning a Scooby, I am use to "common faults" but would like to know what the Leon suffers with, and the costs I would be looking at if the worse happened.

Some VW Parts are cheaper than Seat Parts, Engine parts are the same tho so they can be bought from either Seat or VW

The only parts that need to be bought only from SEAT are leon specific parts like grille's etc

So other than specific parts like grills etc, they are pretty much the same with parts? This is going to be a tough decision by the looks of it!! I bet it comes down to the wire, even after test driving both!!

If you go for the diesel make sure the service book is stamped up AND you get a good warranty deal [ issues with injectors failing after 4yrs etc.-same on MBenz and at around £450 ea plus set up it a expensive fault]

Stuff Like body Panels,Grills etc obviously need to come from Seat

Stuff like Fuel Filter,Injectors,Oil,Suspension,Brake Discs,Brake Pads etc etc etc can all come from any VAG Dealer (Seat,Audi,Skoda or VW). For Example Leon FR Brake Discs (312mm) are the same as on the Golf GTI and Octavia VRS

If you stip the Leon back it is a Golf
