Lost Key Fob

Hi guys,

I wasn't sure where to post this thread. I've read some other key fob threads on the forum, so just wanna ask some questions.

ok so i've lost my Key Fob :-( from my 2008 Seat Leon

it'll cost me about £160 to get a new one from the dealer

SO

can I buy a Seat key fob off eBay (£40) and get it CUT (price?) then Programmed to work (price?). I understand gettin it programmed 1) involves getting some type of technician to program the transponder (not sure who/how ) 2) programming it to open your car

so after those 2/3 steps I'd have a full working key?

Therefore!

Could I buy a key off eBay get it CUT to my car, then take it to the dealer and say "its just stopped working" and they'd program it for free? Does that sound viable? dishonest? good idea?

Cheers guys for the help!
Sorry if i've posted this in the completely wrong place.

P

p.s. I think its a bit silly the way there's no General Seat Forum, because only Leon drivers are gonna read this. and Fobs are a General question:(

I can't comment on whether it's ethical (or possible) do do what you're asking, but the price you mention for a new "flip key" seems a bit on the high side. I've just paid £115 at my dealer for a second key when I bought my Leon FR last week. That included cutting the key and programming the fob to the car.

Hmm still £115 is quite high.

Yeah I haven't given up hope of finding it yet!

Is a fob for sale on eBay, so you can buy them. Dilemma

Far from it,

Get the key fob and blank from ebay, local key cutter (All Timpson's are able to cut the blades) to cut the blade & then a friendly local with VCDS and your sorted for around £50-60 i would guess.

now that sounds promising mhill, so it's true I can buy this blank 1 off ebay, get it cut locally and by friendly local, do you mean I go my local car garage and speak to them about VCDS?

Local dealer will code it up for you but will want to relive your wallet to a fair tune i guess. VCDS stands for VAG Com Diagnostics, quite a few people on here have it. It is a pice of software & a USB cable that interfaces with your car through a PC (im still waiting for a OSX version) and allows you to control, code and read the cars ECU's as well as programing new keys.

Yeah sorry I didn't mean local dealer meant local garage (back street garage). But if it's software I'm sure I can download it myself.

So interfaces via USB does this mean I can use any USB cable to plug my car into my laptop? Where is this connection located? Will it void my warranty plugging it in?
*EDIT* Yeah so i'd need this
cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-K-CAN-1-4-Commander-Diagnostic-Tool-Audi-VW-OBD2_W0QQitemZ370194338262QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment?hash=item370194338262&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:15|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50#ht_3272wt_957
Which gets it up to (FOB - £40 , KEYCUT £10 , VCDS HARDWARE - £16 SOFTWARE - £0) not too bad

To code my keyfob via this VAG Com i'll need some type of connection? How does the fob connect or read/write?

I doubt a backstreet would have VCDS but a Dub specialist certainly will, Yes you can download it your self but you need a OBD II to USB lead specially a HEX CAN or MICRO CAN lead you can get both from Rostech (VCDS Programers of VCDS) but will cost you roughly £250.

Not sure on the exact location buts its around the drivers footwell area.

When coding the fob its basically assigning the RFID to the cars immobilizer and is done wirelessly when the key is in the lock.

You say it'll cost £250 but isn't this the lead I need:

Thats a hell of a lot cheaper, must be wrong?

Everything else sounds easy apart from coding the key

Cheap ebay leads aren't generally compatible with the full version of VCDS! I'm pretty sure you'll need the full (not shareware) version to code a new key fob, altho not 100%! Also cheap ebay leads don't always work, the old adiage you get what you pay for and all! Your best bet if you don't want to buy the full on ross tech officialie cable is to find someone local in the vag-com forum! They'll prolly do it for a bit o beer! I have vag com if your local (or willing to travel) and we can find out how to do it i'll do it for ya for free! I have also lost a key fob and keep meaning to get one off ebay and find out how to code it! Might be cheaper to buy 2 at once (one each)? I'm about 25miles north of brum btw!

Yeah i've found that vag-com forum now thanks :) I think it's just people hunting for drivers that make the leads awkward from ebay

Cheers for the offer, but i'm just on the edge of Liverpool so a bit far (thinking of my petrol ). If I don't find someone, I think i'm going to have a go at this myself. Just have to remember the order to do stuff ( I love lists)

1) buy key fob off eBay (£35)
2) buy vag-com lead compatible with car (£16)
3) download vag-com software
4) Make sure lead works with laptop ;-) drivers etc
5) get eBay key cut to open car ( do I just take the fob key an spare key to Timpsons?) (£10)
6) Program buttons to open car
7) Program with vag-com to work with car
8) et voila £60 half the dealer price

Does this sound correct?, hope i'm not missing or something? - yes i've probably over simplified it :)

Maybe i'll make a TUT if this goes to plan

Well I just rang the SEAT dealer, and he quoted me £180 for a new key exactly the same as my old one. So i'm thinking this is definitely the better option!

Do those eBay usb cables look correct?

i was 80 quid from my local dealer for a spare key (no remote) for my ibiza last year so 115 isnt 2 bad i suppose
