Loud knocking sound whilst driving

Hi All,

For starters, I am new here! I don't drive a Seat, I drive a 2014 Golf GT 2.0 TDI DSG (pictured in profile) - my sister however drives a 2013 Seat Ibiza 1.4 TOCA 3dr. Since she recently purchased it, it has a loud knocking sound from what seems to be from the drivers side, It is prominent when going over roads that are uneven (eg - ones that aren't full of potholes but bumpy roads). It is a loud knocking sound and I have no idea where its coming from or why its there. In potholes it doesn't seem to be as loud weirdly, only when driving constantly, is it dangerous for her to drive it? Also, her MOT advisory says 'Play in steering rack inner joint(s)' and when she turns the wheel quickly from left to right there is a clunking sound, what could this be? Lastly, (long post i know!) what is the service interval for her cambelt change, I'm thinking its 40,000 or 4 years but could someone confirm?

Thank you!

First the important bit, cambelt, every 5 years or maybe 60K which ever happens first, maybe also include a water pump.

Knocking noises, the inner steering rod joint get sloppy quite quickly, I changed my wife's 2002 Polo ones at about 10 years 90K miles and my daughter's late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 16V at 8 years and 40K miles, an easy job.

The top mountings might be causing the knocking and the drop links as well as the ARB D bushes.

thanks for the reply!

Is my sister's due a cambelt change? It's at 63000 miles and looking in the service book there's nothing that indicates it's been changed, how much would one cost from a non Seat specialist? I am a bit worried her driving it now without the cambelt potentially being changed, is there a way for me to check if it has?

Is this knocking noise repair expensive? I have a cousin that owns a garage so i dont spend much in maintance fees, so how much would the repairs cost and will it cause damage to the car?

thanks

I would be quite inclined to agree with RUM4MO about the struts, well the strut top mountings to be precise. I had a polo 6R 1.2tsi R line which developed a failure in the strut mountings, changing the parts is a relatively easy job if you know what to do, parts from memory are a strut top mount which is a rubber bowl type part and a small bearing which inserts inside, relatively inexpensive too around £40-50 if I remember correctly. Does the steering make a bang noise or a clunk when turned full lock to full lock? I’d have it checked by a professional but from your description, that would be my first Avenue of approach. Hope this helps!

edit- I didn’t see the bit when you said about the clunk when quickly turning the wheel, my polo which more or less is the same as the Ibiza, I had to change inner and outer track rods, struts and top mounts, the struts were leaking before the clunks etc so may be worth a bit of investigation.

No real way to check the belt really as belts look quite new for a long time, so yes, if I were you or her, I'd be aiming to get it replaced ASAP to try to avoid a bigger bill if it fails, i think that the cost can be roughly £400, which for at least me was very annoying when keeping a car for 13 years - well even worse when the change period was 4 years!

I'll message the previous owner and ask if he'd had it changed. I agree, I don't think she'd want a £1000+ repair bill! Is there no way for me to check in the service book?

If she stil has the service handbook for that car, then there might be a space for entering "other work", I've forgotten, and it should have been recorded in there along with other jobs like brake fluid replacing at 3 years then every 2 years after that.
