Thats pretty much what the mechanic said in a nutshell (not as much detail) so I'm happy to be fair. I wouldn't be happy with paying 1300 but hopefully it is approved.

So basically, if a matrix fails, and people fix for £80 and do it themselves its more than likely going to happen again as all the sh1t is still in the system, or at least its more likely to.

Very true but since I don't have the option of a warranty claim, I'll happily change my matrix for €80 every 2 or 3 years if I have to. I did mine at the same time I had water pump and t/stat and housing changed, so I ask my mechanic to dump as much coolant as possible.

Certainly not as good as a full system flush but since it took 90,000 miles to get blocked, I hope it won't need any TLC for a while!

I changed my matrix myself in minutes and had my heaters working better than they ever were lol. Changing the matrix and flushing the system genuinely is a DIY job. So many people portray these things to be some sort of specialist task. If it’s covered by warranty happy days your saving yourself a job and money

How many minutes?

Changing the matrix literally took less than 10 minutes. The time consuming part is fiddling around getting the glove box out and flushing out the coolant etc. I was back and fourth on this forum for days. I didn’t realize how easy a job it was

I'm just about to change the matrix on mine as I have a similar problem. It supplies some heat from the driver's side for about 30 mins and then just blows cold air at me to keep the windscreen clear, which is getting very cold at the moment.

How did you go about flushing the coolant and how much did you need to top it up? I was just going to go with removing the hose from the bottom of the radiator to let it drain and then flush through from a hose, but the talk of vacuum filling and bleeding concerns me that I won't be able to refill it without air locks.

When I did mine (same time as water pump change) I just got my mechanic to drop the rad hose and drain as much coolant as possible. I didn't do any bleeding. I just changed it, re-filled the coolant and drove it. I topped up (when cold) about 3 times over the next 2 weeks and that was it. The system is designed to self-bleed and 18 months later it's still working fine.

I'll get the coolant changed again soon when it has a full service as the header tank is a bit cloudy and it would benefit from a fresh batch.
