As the title suggests, how would you go about cleaning the MAF sensor? I've heard it talked about, just not sure what to clean it with and whats involved. I'm assuming this would be a good idea just to keep the car running nicely and keep the fuel consumption to a minimum.

If you're going to clean it be prepared to replace it. If it's working fine don't upset it. They're fragile enough without any help from us.

But if you do feel the need to try cleaning it then you can use electrical contact cleaner (available from Maplins) and hope for the best.:)

Not sure where it is on the Altea? wouldn't mind a look :)
On the 200sx forum they also use a quick squirt of carb or brake cleaner to blast off the build up!

Umm... Thanks for the feedback. I never realised the MAF was so sensitive. I'm going to leave it be me thinks. Cheers chaps.

contact cleaner or ISOPROPYL both work well,
clean mafs once a year on both cars with no failures!
Just spray all over the element ( don't touch it and let it dry overnight) can make a considerable difference, when combined with a new airfilter and a ecu reset !

How do you go about doing this, is the sensor lifted out of the plastic housing?

just doing mine and praying to the MAF gods that it works.
driving a N/A 1.9 diesel suck ass

It is easier to clean out of the housing, the tool looks like a normal flatblade screwdriver with the middle section missing1
But can be done 99% aswell in the housing.
maplins sell a torox bit set, with the maf style removal tool included! ecu reset is a simple battery disconnect for 1 hour and reconnect, ignition on for 1 min then start the car and let it idle for 10mins!
(would suggest doing the ecu reset with the normal fuel you use in the car and a new airfilter, best results)
