I may possibly be making a return to the Mk2. Been after a car to do a little bit of work on, learn the basic of mechanics etc, and a 2.0 8v has taken my fancy. I've spotted one thats well, I think cheap, sub £1k and only 13 miles away from me. Has 10 months tax and MOT, in Kiwi, but its had a new gearbox and timing belt. This has me slightly concerned. Are the gearboxes weak on them? I know on my 1.4 I blew one up, oops, and just wondered if they are the same. Last owner change was shown up in 1999 according to the quick search on the RAC site

the 020 has a bit of a habit of lunching 2nd gear synchro - but given gearboxes cost about £50 for them - it's not worth worrying about.

Was just concerned about it already haviing a gearbox, and it also being so cheap. Looks mint, but we all know looks can be deceptive. Sent the seller an e-mail though and will see what I get back

Too be honest its a good thing (in away) that the gear box has been replaced.
The gearboxes used in the 2litre ibiza and the golf are a common problem.
My mechanic was telling me (when i had mine replaced) he has replaced a number of gearboxes for these particular model.
