Having just got back from working abroad, bought an ibiza FR one week before leaving and am keen to upgrade stereo - just a few quick questions that i would appreciate anyone who can give us the heads up as we all know stock systems generally suck harder than a dyson and am eager to get everything in one go to avoid any unwanted delays. The stereo is completely standard at present.
- is the head unit a double din or single?
- will i need a double din face plate or a single?if a double, will it convert it to a single?
- if it is a double din, am i limited to buying double din head units as the one i have chosen is a single?
- do i need an adapter to convert standard wiring to a iso compatible one for aftermarket parts.
- what size are the front speakers?
-how can i make loads of money

want my stuff to arrive the day i get back so i can crack on and bang out some tunes. There will be no james blunt i promise.

Thanks to all who respond. first job is to jump start the thing as battery has gone dead according to ,mother dearest.......

It will almost certainly be a single din unit in the car. Any single din unit will fit fine, and should come with all the necessary iso adapters needed to get yourself up and running. Just simply go online and take your pick of the single din units and then order it and all will be well. You can go double din as well. Sometimes these are slightly more tricky to install but not awfully so. If you want all done quickly then go with single din, although I do like the more OEM look of a double din unit.

As for speakers the FR has 5.5" in the doors not sure whether they're in the back as well, someone on here can help answer that as I have a pd130 sport, which does. I got a pair of 6*9s and ran the wires from the back speakers (by disconnecting them) to the 6*9s and that made a cracking difference. As for replacing the front speakers there isn't much point. On my old polo I replaced the fronts with a top pair of alpines, tweeters and all and there was barely any improvement in SQ.

If you want to go even louder you could install a sub, that will take a lot of the low range stress off your others speakers and give a much richer sound, I really like doing this and think its a huge improvement but subs sometimes get slandered with a chavvy rep as some people drive around appearing to only want to listen to bass with no mid or treble. But when set up properly makes a fantastic difference. There are plenty of guides on here and all over the net for installing subs.

You can make loads of money by investing in a stock called apple

thanks very much. had the time to scan through older posts and it does seem single din best option. now its just a case of ordering some radio release keys to get the thing out...seems like there's been a load of issues with the head units in the mk4 ibiza's. For future reference the part number for the release keys is PC5-93 from demonaudio.co.uk for the stock unit. will update if this turns out to be 100% correct.

just seen a pair of vibe blackair 6 x 9s for £70 from caraduiodirect - had the old versions of these and they are absolute beasts and as good as any 10 inch sub for similar money without the added weight of a bass box. need an amp to power though as they need the extra juice to perfrom. haven't heard a better pair and i've had a lot of them in my time!

If anyone else can add anything would help as have decided on a head unit and i know how frustrating it is when you order something and then realise you need more parts once you have fitted it to get it all working / sitting properly. coupled with being an impatient ******* as well ;)

As far as i'm awair, i need no face plates and speakers will need adapters to fit in the door wells properly. any advance on this conclusion?

I needed a little plastic trim surround to fit around the head unit when I fitted my aftermarket Pioneer, as pictured below:

You might not need one, only way to find out is to get yours fitted and see how it is!

I remember I needed a wiring adaptor to fit into the back of the stereo to make it work with my car's existing wiring, I can't remember what it was I bought though.
