I'm guessing this concerns a lot of people, me being one of them.
Just found out that as of this year there's been some changes to the test. Seems that retro fitted HIDs are gonna be an MOT fail, I quote :

"HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high so car manufacturers must fit headlamp cleaning and levelling systems.
A car will fail if a mandatory headlamp cleaning or levelling system is missing, doesn't work or is obviously defective."

"Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems."

And I don't think that you can get round this by fitting blue halogen lamps or filters, it's a bit unclear but by the sound if it they will also be an MOT fail.

"Products on the lens or light source that obviously reduce the light's intensity or change its colour will become a reason for failure – applies
to front/rear position lamps, registration plate lamps, stop lamps, rear fog and direction indicators"

I guess this means were all gonna have to take out our HIDs and go back to the old crappy ones. :(

This has been covered many times before, It is illegal to run aftermarket HIDS now and rightly so.

Which official document or website did you get this from ?

The 2012 MOT changes have come in and aftermarket HIDs are NOT illegal.

MOT 2012 rules.

It states :

"Aftermarket HIDs will still pass an MOT if they have a good beam pattern. Levelling and washers are NOT required, but if you do have them, they must work (section 1.7, page 1)"

Thank god for some sense

I'm fed up telling folk this

Just a small point to note - Just because they will pass an MOT, doesn't mean they're not illegal. AFAIK the road traffic act still states they 'might be' illegal.

The quotes came from something I read somewhere else, but this is where I found the info.

I dont know whats right or wrong thats just what I read. what have you read that makes you think they are still ok to have?

The official MOT testers manual that was issued the beginning of this week

Because its PDF, I have no idea how to host it. But I can do single pages if anyone needs them

This links once again suggests headlight washers and self levelling suspension are mandatory.

Oh well, soo confusing. I'll stick with normal bulbs :p

TBH was thinking it was, just due to the fact many people have been saying HIDs are now not an MOT fail.

I'm just gonna get some i think! As long as they are aligned right then there shouldn't be any trouble should there! Only question is 4300k, 6000k or 8000k! - Research time!

4300k or 5000k, I found the 6000k were verging a bit much on the blue, and 8000k are more purple! 4300k or 5000k will also give you better visibility.
