hard to say really what sort of driving have you done - mostly motorway - mixed - mostly in town - heavy throttle (cant blame you if its a new car)

I just got 195 miles to £20 at about £1.08 a litre for diesel out of my TDI 150. This was 40% motorway, rest town driving.

Are you ragging it everywhere?

i get between 160 - 200 miles on £20 depending on how hard i drive , so sounds a bit low , is it due a service? check tyre pressures etc, also you get a better mpg on motorway driving, :D

thanks for replay guys been doing no motorway driving stuck in traffic quite a lot so does it sound abit low also been giving it abit of welly here and there. I have recently checked the tyre pressure and I got 18" alloys on using 225/40 and the pressure was 45 when i checked :wtf: i thought sempt abit high and reduced it to 35 psi all round. So general rural driving should expect around 150 miles maxed?

cheers, lee.

just wondering when the low light comes on fuel gauge how much more should you expect from the tank?

I can manage around 120 miles for £20 in my MK1 LC if i drive carefully, so i definately think you can do better, give it a service and go from there

£20 gets me around 19 litres of diesel, and I'm currently averaging 45mpg, about 10 miles/litre, so I'd expect 19 litres to get me 190 miles. That's being quite unambitious, cruising at about 70 and with a lot of long (90 miles each way) journeys.

Driving around town, or being heavy with the right foot, you could easily drop to 40 mpg, about 8.8 miles per litre, giving 167 miles.

130 miles out of 19 litres is about 30 mpg, you should be getting more than that.

I got about 130miles to a tenner yesterday :funk: but it was 80% motorways! Although it was rush hour with some stop n start, was quite impressed! But I suppose because it was rush hour I struggled to get above about 60 on the motorway, so that's probably why lasted a long time!

another update I have done just over 100 mile to £20 and the fuel light has come on so does this not sound abit low?? I am always 100% doing town driving no motorway journeys and no I am not ragging it all over I think the last station I filled up at I paid around 114p so next time round gonna keep receipt and check it out.

At 114 pence per litre that would be 17.5 litres or so, giving an mpg of about 26. I've never seen figures that low on my TDI 110 Toledo.

Do you spend a lot of time in slow-moving or stationary traffic queues? That will drive the mpg down. Otherwise I'd be looking for binding brakes. Jack up each corner and spin the wheel by hand (obiously chock the front wheels before lifting the back end).

Stop guessing on how far you're going on £20. Fill the tank to the brim, reset the trip counter and run a tankfull. Then fill up to the brim again and see how much it takes to fill up again, then use that amount and the miles travelled to work out your MPG. Filling up with £20 and driving til the light comes on will be very inaccurate.

You'll be lying to yourself too ;)

As if only put £20 in, you'll get a higher mpg, because the car is lighter than if you did a full tank. Makes a huge difference in weight having a full tank to having half tank full. Why do you think in F1 they have lots of boffins working out to the exact ml how much fuel to put in (which will be even more crucial next year in f1 season!)

Anyway, strayed a bit away from the point, but to get accurate mpg reading fill it to the max, reset odometer, then get the needle as low as you dare to go (I've managed 80miles on the yellow light before I chickened out!), then work out the mpg! Easy!

yeh I have been wondering with me putting £20 in all time how accurate it actually is so I will full the tank next time then work out mpg. Jesus 80 miles on yellow light I have only done like half that on yellow light so might take chances and go that little further 160 mile to £20 would be nice, isn't it abit damaging to engine though to let it virtually empty of fuel?

why can't people just work out their mpg instead of quoting x miles for £x and £x.xx! I pretty much always average 45 mpg, regardless of how the mix of my driving changes, although i do predominantly motorway miles.

I got from Chester to north of Glasgow) on less than half a tank and was about 280 miles.
One of my best runs so far, and let's just say I wasn't hanging around either, completing journey in under 4 hours (usually takes 4 n half to 5 hours). :funk: Very impressed with fuel economy, seems to be better on long runs now after fitting pipercross panel filter!

Because I was being lazy :) im sure the average readout was around 45 - 50 mpg anyways... cant say better than that!
