Hello, I would just like to give my short experience of owning my first car with a DPF. I purchased my Leon FR (2007) last September from a small independent dealer. It had done just over 93k & I was really impressed with the performance & economy. This happiness was short lived when I noticed the DPF light had come on after owning the car for just over 2 days. Alarm bells started ringing & I was gutted to say the least especially because of the bad press the DPF’s appear to have. I immediately saw pound signs in front of my eyes. Any way I had researched the whole DPF issue prior to purchasing the Leon so I knew I had to take it for a blast down the motor to hopefully extinguish the light. After about 10 miles at a steady 70mph in 5th it worked. I was unaware of how the car was driving previously to me owning it so i prayed that my actions would have given the DPF a good clean out & banished the dreaded light for ever. Nope! After about another 200 miles the light was back on & I was back up the M1 again. After this happening another 2 times I was starting to lose my normal calm self & beginning to get rather pissed off. I couldn’t understand it, I was doing a steady motorway run twice a day from Leeds to Huddersfield at approx. 18 miles each way. I Googled the whole situation again & I came across a small bit of advice regarding the driving style suited for car’s fitted with DPF’s. Basically I had been doing the motorway driving generally in 5th just bordering on 2000RPM. I modified this by keeping the car in 4th doing approx. 2500RPM at 60MPH, 60MPH is the max speed limit on the M62 in the area I use it. Whatever speed I was doing I would make sure I was in a gear which would keep me at approx. 2500RPM. I was under the impression that for economy I should be in 6th as soon as possible but to be honest I was still seeing good MPG for the way in which I was driving. Anyway 3000 miles later & I still have not had the light come on once touch wood! I am really pleased with this as other than the DPF issue the car is fantastic. Hopefully this may help someone in a similar situation.

rather than sacrifice your mpg, is there a way to clean the dpf? a 90k PD lump probably is quite dirty, i know on vcds you can actually log it and see how % full the dpf is too, so it might worth having a look as it could just need a proper flushing out

I did wonder whether that is exactly what has happened, in the sense that he has run the car at high rpm a lot recently and has may have cleaned the system out.

I think that is the case. Like I said I have no idea of its history before me & whether it had been used for short journeys or not. But I assume my style of driving is keeping the DPF from building up any soot?
