Hello, 1st post on here!

Just some background info, after many cars of all sizes and shapes and needing 5 doors, finally got myself a long overdue, K1

Boughht of a friend as a swap for my car, the K1 is now mine! A stage 2+ K1, coming from a 335i smooth twin turbo car, the raw power is always fun and the car is lovely to drive, reg is in title and hoping to find the previous owner for a chat :)

The car is inferi black, with literally loads of mods, its like its been dipped in Forge with all reciepts to prove, average millaege and FULL SEAT history!!

HOWEVE there is a drawback, now the rest may sound a bit here and there, but when i bought the car i was told that the gearbox does NOT have any issues (hmm) but seeing as it drove fine and a i got a good deal i thought id take a punt. The friend i bought it off assures me the gearbox is fine, and he reckons the guy he bought it off told him that due to these having some sort of weak linkage, they placed some sort of pin/aftermarket mod on the linkage to hold the gear in 3, and because of this if i really hammer it into 3rd from 2nd there is a slight noise, which is more of a knock rather than a crunch :)S) i was wondering a few things, now my friend took the car in part ex, he has a car lot with about 150 or so cars, including many high performance S3s, M3, GTRs etc etc, and he used to drive this car as his daily for the last few months, neway ive got a few questions, some relevant some not lol

1) has anyone heard of this 'mod' before and also is the gearbox the weak point? If not can i upgrade the so cqlled weak link, the Linkage?

2) if it is the 'box' should i recon / diff etc and best place to go for this work

3) ling (long) term goal is to big turbo, from what i know im guessing il need to forge top end, GT30 (or similiar) rS4 injectors etc?

4) i am based in the Midlands, any recommendations on any specialists i can use?

Thanks! I appreciate all answers in advance!

:)

welcome....

I'm no pro on the gearbox issue however considering the K1 shares the same engine as the Cupra R, Cupra, VW golf and the audi etc and my understanding is the gearboxes are the same across the VAG group running this motor..... I find it odd that I've never heard about the weak linkage holding gear 3 in?

I own a MK2 Cupra R and did a lot of research and never came across this so called issue so I would guess and say it's bullshit.

Also, you say you are in the midlands. It's a big place... what City or Town are you in? It may be easier for people to recommend a specialist that way.

No such thing as a weak linkage fix, however when you tune these cars gearbox oil changes are always thought best to do. I do mine ever 10k miles. Running Single Mass Flywheels can cause sloppy changes, the gearboxes themself are fairly solid. I would suggest if its clunking 2nd to 3rd it may be an engine mount or gearbox mount issue. If its a crunch sound your synchro may be away and need a new syncromesh

Thanks for all the feedback and it is............3rd gear synchro.

Now to find a Quaife :)

Any suggestions?

Ive seen a few, jus googling and comparing prices at the moment, range from about 800 to 900 with the bolts..... Think next weeks pay cheque should cover it
