Yup, but what people seem to forget is you've got to add at least £2k in options on the VW and more on the Audi to get similar levels of spec.

And to be fair, some people still can't see past the badge anyway.

Yep I've not seen one report comparing like with like, sure you can have a 3dr Golf at a lower spec for a few £££ more but when the real difference is £2-3k then that's mega money IMO.

I appreciate what you're saying Z and M0rk, however I can get my hands on an FR with 200bhp for £16K.

An extra £4K for the Cupra? For what exactly?

I'm going to paint my FR grill and mirrors black, paint my brake callipers red, and get it Revo'd to 240bhp. Shouldn't cost more than £16,750 all in.....

Don't get me wrong, I love sporty Seats (that's why I had a cupra and drive an LCR). But for £20K I would want something a bit "more special".

Call it £18,495 and I'd have one over the equivalent Focus / Astra / Mazda. At £20K i'd spend a little bit more and get an R32 or Quattro Audi.

It comes down to personal choice, the Golf doesn't appeal to me that much, and i do prefer 5 door cars, so thats approx £21k basic for the Golf GTi 5 door, then add everything i want to it options wise add another £2k, and its just a FR with a VW badge.

The Audi's are nice, but even a 2wd version your adding at least another £1.5k to the VW's price for a Sportback S Line , a Quattro would be even more. At least the Cupra should be packing S3 power potential.

Focus / Astra / and the butt ugly Mazda don't even come into my choices, even if they are similar prices.

At the end of the day its always got to be about personal choice. If you can't justify the £20k, (taking into account 5% inflation since the Leon R 225 was sold for just over £18k), then the FR is a bargain and and FR would be my next choice over the Cupra.

I think that's what I'm getting at Z. I bought my LCR at the £15K "new price" not the original £18K, which is why I think the new one is so expensive.

The FR really is excellent value. IMHO the Cupra is not. But what do I know :)

I had a look at the new Honda Civic Type S yesterday. Very nice but the GT 1.8 petrol version in the showroom was £19,000. The Type S is a warm hatch so I guess the Type R will be at least £20,000. That seems to be about the going rate for the new crop of hot hatches.

"The problem is that it simply doesn't feel that fast. Below 2,000rpm there's no punch whatsoever, and even above this figure there's none of the strong, instant hit of acceleration that you get from the likes of the Golf GTI or Focus ST. In these cars, you get a little kick in the back every time you floor your right foot, but in the Cupra you simply get more mild acceleration. "

?????? It's the same engine as the GTI but with a bigger turbo and more power. WTF????

"But, in reality, it's a little bit too sensible. And on the motorway, the Cupra is frankly boring. "

"and it bounces and jiggles like an over active lap dancer. "

Surely though that is down to the map they have used.

Im unsure yet, but got my name on the list, as the options are not as yet fully known, nor the available colours, it will be firmed up when they make the order.

But Zenith Grey (dark blue grey) or that new Black colour. Got to flog the R though, that's foremost on my mind at present.

I ca't beleive your ording one now!

What about negotiating on price, am waiting until Jan before I decide, best time for discounts.

Will be looking for atleast 10% then with a good price for trade in (and before you all start saying never) it does happen I purchase a new car every month for our fleet and 10% is easy.

Also I did it on our lasses Type R 2 years ago when there was a 3 month waiting list etc.

I still say 20K base is too much, so it is cheeper than the golf, so what!!!!! This is a different market to the golf, (the golf will sell what ever it is like) and the golf is just even more over priced!

Who said we've negotiated anything, were just securing our places on the list, its the car we want, and our finanicial negotiations are our business :)

Sorry I thought you had order/entered into a contract to buy.
