Any recommendations for some - not keen on the shiny "wet" look that most dressing comes as - any recommendations for something that just takes the rubber back to a dark matt finish?

To be honest most of the dressings will dry down to a matt finish if you wipe down the tyre a few minutes after applying with a MF cloth or something similar.

I would recommend CG's New Look Trim Gel as thats what i currently use. if you leave it to dry it has a slight shine but if buffed is matt.

You can use in on the rest of the black plastic trim as well.

I use wilkinson Spray tyre foam drys to a nice non shiney finish and easy to use

I have two tyre dressing... some customers ask for the non wet look aswell...

I have Autosmart Smart Shine - Wet look

And AutoGlym Instant tyre dressing - non wet look.

I use AutoGlym Instant tyre dressing - non wet look too. Recommend it, very good. :)

I've just recently tried Meguiars Tyre dressing - states on the label that it will maintain a deep black wet look to the tyre for weeks....... The following day that "wet look" had virtually gone!?

It hadn't rained at all. But I do wipe around the tyre after spraying?
Perhaps I shouldnt wipe, just spray and leave.

Go with what Lewis1600 is saying- I only used Autoglym on my customers cars and the true dressing they do is great. Only problem with it is that it's water based not oil based like most "wet look" dressings, so if it rains the it will come off... On the upside though it doesn't fling oil onto the bodywork and make it look like you've driven through tar!

I use this, find it very good for the price however it does depend how much you put on.

I apply mine with a little sponge, and wipe round with the clean side once dry and it gives a nice black without the shine.

Apply more and leave it and it should stay pretty shiney if thats what your after.

Might give it another go then! Tbh, the tyres were already wet (water), when applying, as I had cleaned the Alloys beforehand.

Also I tend to spray from the bottle directly onto the tyre (lazy), then wipe round with the cloth, again for even coverage, plus to remove the over spray on the alloys!

I will try your technique and apply to a sponge first, THEN wipe that around the tyre wall... :)

make sure the tyre wall is clean and dry first tho, will give you better results.

Applied the Megs to the dry tyres the other evening.

They did initially have a nice wet black look to them, upon applying.
However by the next morning (just sat in the garage overnight), no wet look, just the tyres look a bit cleaner/blacker than they did before.

Another product that I recall worked better was Zymol tyre dressing.
Comes in a clear plastic bottle with Black oval sticker.

How much are you putting on? with the Megs I have found that the more you treat the tyre the better the results. Also i have found differeing results with the type of tyre.

For example my avon ZZ3s always come up with a nice glossy finish where as the goodyears on the Focus tend to come up more matt.

Tried both spraying directly onto the tyre, then wiping round with the sponge (for even coverage / plus to catch any dripping).

More recently, tried your technique, applied onto the sponge first, then wipe the sponge around the wall of the tyre. I am quite enthusiastic in my application, I dont skimp on the spraying. :D

Very similar result with both - matt, darker look, as described previously. No wet look or glossy finish.
Just looks tidy. But doesnt look like the tyres have been given any "special" treatment.

Very interesting point. So we can deduce the overall finish you achieve, will also come down to the compound of the tyres too! Will put my results down to that.

I use autosmart smart shine mostly...

i apply that using a paint brush. quick and easy.
