OEM Bridgestone S001's bad handling and wheel spinning

Hi all. Just wondering who got Bridgestone S001's (On 18" performance alloys) fitted to their pride and joys? Currently running with them on my 6 month old 184 FR TDI and have noticed some bad handling characteristics. Especially front wheel spin in the wet and the back end in some circumstances not being stable  have already been into the stealership to get the suspension checked as I thought it was this not helping and feel sometimes the car is wobbling around side to side and in some cases get a bit of pull now and again to the left on the front. Have had Bridgestones before on cars like the Subaru Impreza and noticed they have a habit of tram lining. So was interested in other owners views. The car has only done 4,500 miles thus far.
Cheers, Jon.

Jon,

I have the same tyres on mine at the moment and in the dry i'd say they are very good but I have noticed similar characteristics that you described in the wet. I noticed the same with a previous Mazda that I owned.

From the research I have done, Goodyear appear to be making the best tyres at the moment, their flagship tyre out performs bridgestones in every way. The reviews certainly reflect that. Just for your info ;)

That's good to know. Thanks for your confirmation. Was thinking the worst that my tracking could be out. Don't want to be spending any money on new tyres just yet. Did replace some Bridgestones on a Scooby STi to Goodyear tyres on recommendations at the time and it was a complete difference. Do rate the Uniroyal rain sports but they tend to have a softer tyre wall.

I have these on my alloys. I have the mk3 performance alloys on my mk2 1.6tdi. And have experienced wheels trying to spin and not very good grip in the wet conditions. Wouldn't like to think how they are on the 184's. (I have driven one and now want one )

I've gone for Sport Cup 2 tyres instead, not their best in the wet or the wet leaves season but prevents all the drama of wheel spins and wheel hop when accelerating out of a hole.

I've just put four Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen1 winter tyres on the car as according to the reviews they seem to be just about the best winter tyres available just now. I have to say I've liked Goodyear tyres any time I've used them.

I liked the performance of Vredestein tyres too, used a lot of those, but after a couple of instances of side-wall problems I'm off them.

Our last car was a Mazda 6 which came with Bridgstone tyres. The car tramlined and squirmed under heavy braking. I initially thought it was just the car but fitting different tyres removed both issues!

I ordered the 034 Motorsports cast aluminium dogbone insert this Friday. I hope that will eliminate the severe wheelhop.

Got Bridgestones on my 63 1.4 FR. Cannot stand them. Noisy, and poor wet traction. Although, by no means as bad as the Toyo Proxes on my old Mazda 3. They were just downright dangerous in the wet. I swapped em for some Conti SC5s, which were so much better.

I've seen good things about the Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetrics mind.

Auto Express regularly do tyre reviews - something to check out when the time comes to change.

I think it's best to take most reviews with a little salt but the Auto Express tyre tests seem very good. A lot of the tyres I've bought have been off the back of those tests and I've found that my findings match theirs exactly. They're good tests.

My main peeve with tyres these days is the labelling system. The sticker only shows three criteria; wet grip, economy and drive-by noise so the manufactures are all designing their tyres to do well on these three things. But every tyre is a compromise and if you do that, other factors have to suffer. Try finding a tyre with a thick sidewall, they don't exist any more. So you're tyres are quiet but have poor road feel and are damaged easily.

My car came with them on the Titanium 18" wheels, they seem OK in the dry and warm but bad in the cold and wet.

I don't like low grip so bought another set of wheels ( 18" ) with winter tyres to use until the summer, loads of wet grip now.

Cant really comment to much on them but the road noise / tyre noise seems a little excessive, shame we cant choose what tyres are cars come with really, as i would choose Dunlops or Goodyears most probably!!

Manufacturers fit what they get good deals on. The get tyres as stupid-low prices because the tyre manufacturers know that a lot of people will stick with the tyre that came on the car, assuming that the car maker has chosen the best tyre for the car.

When I was looking at cars I saw the same model of Leon with at least four different brands of tyre! I guess they just fitted what was cheap that week.

Funnily enough, my two sets of wheels have Dunlop and Goodyear tyres on them ;0)

My car is in for its first service next week. Have decided that the Bridgestones are to go. Had enough of the poor handling, wheel hops and dreaded it when the rain came and made the roads damp and wet.
So after some research, have opted for 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. I know a few owners have opted for the Michelin Super Pilot Sports. But having looked at online reviews, they were a mix bag of favourable to okay as long as you got them warmed up. The PS4 seem to have more favourable review.
I know this is late in the day for asking. But has anyone else tried these?
Fingers crossed these will make the car more enjoyable to drive and get better handling.

I have them on mine, all good until it gets a little wet then they spin easy in sport mode.

Hope they are going to be a lot better than the Bridgestones I have on now. :( reviews from owners of other cars rate the PS4 tyres. As for the super sports these have a little wear rated review.

Well now have the ps4 tyres fitted. And I am really pleased with these. 1st this morning in the dry car feels different with these tyres. I am amazed how really bad the Bridgestones were. Grip in the dry fantastic. Tonight on the way home from work in the wet. Again wow! Pulls off the line and no wheel spin. Handles the bumps really well. Will see how well these last. But I am feeling more confident with these.

Any experience with Pirelli P Zero's please? I find they spin and lose traction easily on 290, even in second when I go a bit harder. And thats on a dry smooth road. Would PSS or PS4 be so much better?
