hi guys,

has anyone had the trouble of a welded on oil filter? I dont think the idiot that owned the car before me put any oil on the seal before putting it on! Ive been at it with a nylon strap and extension bar but all its done is crush it slightly! Iv heard of the method of sticking a screwdriver through it but i dont really want to have to chizel the seal off if it gets stuck! Theres not alot of room and i dont want to damage anything. Anyone got any ideas?

cheers

I used a chain tool with extension, and then a trolley jack handle on the extension to make it even longer (more leverage). That got it off! You can ram a screwdriver through it and use that to twist it, but if you do and it still doesn't come off your car will be undriveable as you'll have holes in your filter!

Get the socket for the oil filter, local independent auto factors might stock them like GSF and Eurocarparts as do halfords in the Laser tools section think its called a 12 or 14 flute oil filter socket and lists it does porsche/bmw and most importantly VAG.

Cheaper option, other than ramming a hole in the filter, is a buy an constrictor or what ever its called. One of these......

About £6-£8 from B&Q, works a treat & multiple purpose. :D

get a filter socket as mentioned, easyest and less chance of getting sore knuckles lol. dont use a screw driver, i seen a mate do that and it just cut the filter in half when he tried to turn it and was left with a right pain trying to get that off.

Cheers guys, I never knew there was a socket for them! Pop out to halfrauds later! If that doesnt work ill try the constrictor. Thats why i didnt want to use a screwdriver. i hear its a right pain trying to get the seal off without damaging the plate! cheers guys :D
