I was just having a look at something else and noticed there seems to be a lot of what looks like oil around the gear linkage. Is this normal?

There's also some around the filler cap:

Should I be worried?

The oil around the filler cap is proberly where some has spilt it when topping the oil up and not bother to clean it up, over time all the crap sticks to it,,

As for the linkage, how much oil are we talking?? Dripping?? The linkage is at the top of the gearbox so it's either going to be leaking down on to it,, Or the seals around the selector shafts, I doubt that tho,,

Have you replaced the clutch recently, it could be clutch fluid from being bleed up that hasn't been cleaned off,,

There's no need to worry ( that's if it's not dripping ) I'd get a can of brake cleaner and give the oily area a generous spay, brake and clutch cleaner is the best product to use on oily mess's, it breaks the oil down and just runs off with the cleaner, then evaporates after a couple of seconds

Then just keep an eye on it to see if the oily crap comes back!

Thanks Lowry.

I can't see anything dripping, just looks like it's built up over time. Haven't had the clutch replaced. I've got to get some air con cleaner from Halfords anyway, so will pick up some brake stuff at the same time.

Bought some Wynn's brake and clutch cleaner today, so will give it a spray when it's not raining.

I've cleaned away some of the oil around the linkage, but think I've found where it may have been coming from. There's quite a lot of residue/semi-dried oil here

What could this be? Should I be expecting a hefty bill?

Thanks for the quick response Ross. I think that was mentioned on a service or two ago thinking about it.

Thank god for that :). Didn't want to send the Cobra exhaust that's still boxed up in the dining room back..
