Oil light flash and warning beep (red)

Hiya people,

Finding the oil light flash on and beep once, but only after a quick drab of the throttle or hard acceleration. It doesn't always come on though, can be driven sometimes without it coming on. No other performance issues....still runs fine and oil level been checked.

I've heard of oil pressure sensor/blocked oil siv in the sump pick-up?!

Anyonelse experience this? how much for repairs etc..

Got a Cupra 1.8 20VT

Thanks :D

You are referring to the oil can illumination in your central instrument panel, yes??

I didn't think that beeped at you, red oil can warning to me means serious problem (oil pressure problems), i wouldn't be driving it. Starve the engine of oil, bye bye.

There are many threads on here relating to coolant light flashes and beeps, you are aware your car doesn't have an oil gauge yes? (Sorry needed to be said, as many people think their coolant gauge is an oil 1;))

Yes mate, the red oil can indicator.

Yeah, realise pointing out the obv. No definetly the oil. It's rattling just under 2500 revs now (when turbo kicks in it disappears), so it's heading to the dealer within the end of the week.

Know what I need for VAG kit? good places to get it and prices etc...?

what year is your car?
I have leon cupra on an x and it doesent have the (orange warning beep) like my x reg t sport used to have.
Are you sure the oil level is ok??
mines only ever been on when oil level is low.
Have you had it vag-commed?
If theres any sensors that are buggered, that will tell you.
Whens the last time you had it serviced, oil filter changed etc?

It's an '02' reg. just shy of 70,ooo miles. Last serviced by the dealer before selling it to me (only picked it up yesturday!) but before that at 60,000 (12months ago)

It's not been on vag yet, they need to do the radio code also....am not paying for that (they let it go flat)

I'll get it sorted shortly!

Well tbh i'm not too sure how far I can go with it.....I think i've only got the one day/75miles card to play with them. I did get a 12month warranty with it though, worth £1000 lol. Hopefully they sort the problem out within that budget lol.

Chhers for your opinions on this guys

Had the same problem on my 01 cupra.
Phoned dealer and after telling the tech. symptoms ,told me not to start car and arranged recovery for me , car was still under warrenty then.
Was the oil pickup in the sump , tech. at dealers told me if i'd done any sort of high mileage or hard driving i'd of wrecked the engine.

XP800 - Did your car have a strange clicking/knocking noise from the top of the engine?

Well I had it happen on my old Leon, which wasn't a Cupra. Oil light comes on - checked oil. The oil was slightly low, but not dangerously so. Filled it up. Light went off. Drove home. Light came back on beeping maniacally at me. Had a full service done with new oil and the like. Light calmed down a bit. Put some oil enhancer in cos garage told me to - drove car round the block - huge puff of smoke from the exhaust, oil light goes nuts and then the engine management light appears and the car cuts out. I think I've blown something - car goes to garage - turns out the cambelt had gone askew and slipped about 4 notches, altering the oil sensor in the process. Repair cost £260 with no engine damagement but the garage actually stuck a pic of the car on their wall dubbing as 'The Car Who Lived' because apparently the car shouldn't have been able to drive a mile with that cambelt, let alone the 7,000 it had done in the time I had it.

Moral - get it checked. I think it's a rare problem but you can never be sure!

Cheers for that space black, i'm awaiting seat to call me back on the issue. Then hopefully get it looked out for free, being i've owned it for 2 days/75miles.

I looked into the law side of things, and seems they qould need to put it right free of charge or replace with the same spec...

I hope so - though depends what your warranty with the garage states. If they've sold you a faulty car though they should sort it. Let us know how it goes!

Oil light came on and beeped when under load, would not come on if you drove it slowly and didn't rev. it. I only drove it a very short distance, to get it off the road before phoning dealer.
Can't remember any knocking noise, but I can remember tech. being really surprised no major damaged had been done, I'm sure he mentioned oil pump can be damaged due to lack of oil, but mine was fine.
Never had this happen again after this and had the car for another 3 years/100,000 miles before trading in.

this happened to my LCR sounds the same as whats happend to yours, i did a oil change but it wasn't the porblem, with mine the pick up pipe was blocked, so although the engine had oil in it, none was getting through the pick up pipe. result, need a new engine! take it back or get it looked at asap, i wouldn't even drive it anymore. as for the law side of things,, ( i looked into a bit) you have a right under the consumer act, basicly they sold you goods that is not fit for purpose, they have to do it, give trading standards a call.

It maybe ok, but what your describing is the same as mine, i did an engine flush before the oil change, it worked for a little while then the light came back. IF you do have a problem then driving it will cause it more damage. my advice would be, tell the garage so they have it on record and ask them to sort it.
