Oil Starvation??

Went for a drive earlier and ended up in traffic so I turned my engine off and rolled down a hill a short distance.

When I went to start up again the engine made a really bad noise (metallic grinding and knocking) while cranking. I then quickly turned the engine off and the YELLOW/ORANGE Oil light flashed three times.

The car was at a slight angle with the front left wheel lower than all others.

I then went to try again and it was absolutely fine. I left the car for a few hours and checked the oil and there is plenty in there and I have had no problems driving home.

Any idea what it could be?

ps: I only changed the oil about 2 weeks ago with a new oil filter as well. The oil is Fully synthetic 5W40 (VW502.00, 505.00, spec), my engine is the ASV, VE 110hp engine.

i would hazard a guess the pickups usede would be the same.... but i am only guessing. I wouldnt drive it until its been checked out, when my oil light came i got the RAC to pick me up and take me to the garage. If it is the pick ups you don't want to risk starving the engine of oil

I drove the car home after checking the oil which was about 10 miles and I had no problems with the low oil light or the oil pressure light coming on and the engine sounded absolutely fine.

Luckily I stopped cranking before the engine fired and when I cranked the engine a second time it sounded fine and ran perfectly.

I am thinking that because I was on a decline with the front left of the car lower than the rest of the car the oil may have drained to that corner of the sump and upon cranking it then re-distributed the oil.

Maybe I am just saying that to reassure myself!

I will scan the car for fault codes tomorrow and check for problems.

Were you rolling when you cranked it over?

Funny you say that, I was rolling a little.

Why so you say that?

Because the flywheel may have been moving for one reason or another so the grinding noise was probably the starter motor missing the ring gear on the flywheel.

The car was in neutral but like you said I was rolling slowly. I did think it could be the starter against the flywheel but I'm not sure why the car low oil pressure light was flashing.

I just had a look at the manual and it says that the Yellow light means LOW OIL, Flashing Yellow means faulty low oil sensor.

This is very odd as there is definitely enough oil in there (especially as I only changed it a few weeks ago).

I think it must have been the strange angle the car was at that caused the light to come on. As for the noise, I assume something did not have oil for a few seconds, I hope it is not an issue.

I went out for another drive today and have not had any issues yet. The engine oil level is fine and I have had no warning lights or noises from the engine.

Fingers crossed it was just the starter making noise and the angle of the car that caused the light to come on.
