Yeah they were complete rubbish! Ordered myself some silentcoat, i know I'll only end up making a mess with the glue!
Under the back seat, did you just pull the carpet back as far as you could or did you remove it completely?

I've done the whole car, and all I can say is this - biggest difference is when you properly insulate wheel arches (outer trim) and put on quieter tyres. That is the root of all noise.

Probably good stuff to use on the inside of the car , but not so sure on the doors , it looks like it will retain moisture unless sealed , and judging from how much water comes out of the drivers door when i open it maybe not such a good thing.

I dynamated both my front doors and that made a massive difference to how solid the door felt when closed.

Why is everyone bothering? I don't think the road noise is particularly that bad. All your doing is adding more weight to the car. Possibly blocking up drain holes an such like. Just can't see the point. If you want a quiet sensible car buy one

Each to there own i guess, i like a quiet cheap fun car which the leon is! also the sound from the speakers is far better too! Now the sound proof has been added, the doors don't feel thin if that makes sense! If i was worried about adding weight i would not buy a leon as they heavy car to start with or take a big crap before i drove it :) We are adding sound proofing which in my eyes should be there from the factory like a3's but i guess you get what you pay for

Sound proofing isn´t "that" heavy, unless you gonna stuff your car way beyond reason i very much doubt that you will feel the difference on the road (as everyone will assume this is talk about, not some track day weapon)

dkaric - when you say the outer trim of the wheel arches, do you mean the plastic trim that is physically outside the car? like the first bit of plastic straight above the tyres?

I'm going to give this a go not too long from now as I'm sick of the road noise.
What was decided is the best material to use? Dynamat?
To me it seems 80% of the noise is coming from the back so that's getting done first.

I was going to use dynamat but the stuff I used has done a great job tbh at a fraction of the cost :)

I was underneath my Leon today and noticed this large gap underneath the back seat, with no soundproofing whatsoever!

above this is the back seats and very little else. I was thinking it might be worth sticking some sound proofing here on the outside of the car, far handier than ripping up carpets. so long as whatever I use is waterproof...

I was also thinking that it could be easy to remove the two long strips of plastic running front to back on either side of the exhaust and do the same,

Just a thought that occurred to me today, I figured it might be worth sharing!

Yeah I'm not sure myself! I used silentcoat on the interior, it's just self adhesive rubber with an aluminium layer on top; should be water proof I would have thought. Most of it is protected by that black plastic, and the area under the seat is still very clean for a 5 year old car so maybe it doesn't get much dirt off the road. I still have to finish the boot interior but the underside was just a thought that popped up today!

Hi,

Sorry for bringing up this old topic again.

Can anyone give a short guide on how to remove the carpets surrounding the rear wheel arches in a Leon?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do this :)

You need to take off the side plastic trims which are screwed on off, peel back the boot seal a bit and there are a few clips and two (i think) bolts at the bottom which hold the tie downs down then it should just pull out! :)

Cheers hope it helps

Just wanted to say thanks for the great advice on this thread. As an Ibiza Mk4 owner (which is possibly even worse than the Leon!) I've been wanting to do something about the road noise for ages. I can never hear my music properly!
