If you flagged up the issue with the water pump at the previous service when your car was under warranty, then it should be logged on the dealer’s system. The fact that the dealer ‘investigated‘ (what did they actually do when they investigated - it might have just been a quick visual check) last year and couldn’t find a fault doesn’t necessarily mean it was fault free last year - I’d be pushing for it to be fixed under warranty.I've just had my 11/2018 290 in for it 3rd service (£189) I've also been hit with a potential big bill...
Air Conditioning Inoperative. Fault stored for low gas pressure, requires air con service £139.00 VAT Inc.
Brake fluid change due £69.00 VAT Inc.
Coolant level was low, found leak from waterpump and thermostat area, will need further investigation - Requires rebooked.
Front diff oil change due - due every 3 years £98.61 VAT Inc.
NSR Tyre - Cut in tyre, down to cords - Only continentals available from supplier. £153.22 VAT Inc.
Rear pads - 20% life left - Discs lipped. £329.00 VAT Inc.
Not bad for a 3 year old car with only 25k on it
I'm sure the diff oil was due at 4 years? I have a matching spare tyre with 4mm on it so I will be putting that on and as for the brakes I'll be buying parts myself and have a local garage doing them!
The dreaded water pump issue was previously investigated during last service but no issue found. I've only ever topped it a little once.
A little miffed at it all.

I’d also be getting a second opinion on the brakes; highlighting the need for replacement brakes seems to be a favourite money maker with VW dealers too - they’re often not as worn as the dealer states they are.
