Starting to regret buying my FR in metallic black. Only had it for a few months and got an annoying collection of stone chips in my bonnet and roof! Has anyone used the Seat chip repair sticks? Are they easy to use and do a good job?

Guys at work are telling me to get the paint only as it goes on smooth and can be blended in easy.

ive had couple on my front bumper of my old car and managed to touch them in and blend it ok.

paint is very brittle on SEAT cars as I found on my old mk2 FR so I try and stay well back of the car in front

It will never be the same when they are touched in may as well just leave them the way they are, black is one of the worst colours to have.

Disagree, I have Phantom Black and found it a lot more durable than the Emocioen Red I had before. Also touching up with SEAT stick hardly leaves a trace of the chip, and no need to use the clear coat on top, I just rubbed it down with turtle wax scratch remover followed by colour magic and perfect.:D

Mk2 was candy white, it was a nightmare for chips on the plastic parts. The paint would chip easily to reveal black plastic. Nothing worse than that, would have been hard to notice on a black car, so I'm not sure I agree with you.

Chips are a pain but if you follow some simple steps a good job can be made off them.

Biggest mistake just touching them in without cleaning the chip out, one wash and the paint is gone.

1. Clean out chip with some IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol)

2. Touch Up Paint don't use supplied brush its only fit for the Mrs Nails.

3. Get a fine artist brush or a cocktail stick and slowly fill in the chip if you have good eyes great if not wear your glasses and flow the paint into the chip edges I use a magnifying glass sometimes.

4. Leave to harden for a few days and Polish but I have a 6 year ole Leon in Candy White and you can hardly notice any chips.

Their are lots of techniques but for simple chips this hasn't failed me cleaning the chip is the main thing to remember.

Need to look out my artist brushes then, glad I didn't chuck them, as I always get a bit too much paint on and then need to do more rubbing down, good advice. Where about are you as you good pop round and show me how.

Hi there , where do you get the IPA from? Always have bother in seeing the chips after I have touched them up, even tried the chipex treatment but there wasn't enough of the fluid for taking the paint off, wonder if this was IPA?

Thanks, the chipex is quite dear as I bought it for my last car and probably did not do it justice as my attemts did not look as good as the video reviews of it, albeit they are mostly on black cars and mine was silver.

Just bought the IPA from Ebay. £4.19 for 100ml. Figured I wouldn't need much. Now going to message my local Seat garage and see about getting the chip repair stick. Thanks for the useful guide. Any time I've tried to repair chips it's made it look worse!

I am going to get some IPA

At the moment I use white spirit on an ear bud, allow to dry and then touch in with BMW Black sapphire touch up on the shadow black FR. I had this paint in stock from my last but one car and the colour match is close enough for me. I do a thin layer then another thin layer the next day then 3rd day after. I wait a week and then gently autogylm across the repair by hand. Not perfect but good enough for me.

Really helpful post, thanks. Presumably methylated spirit would work just as well as IPA?

Re Meths not sure ,the reason of IPA is that it leaves no residue so the paint gets a good bond. It is also good for cleaning glass and you can see it evaporate away.

"Carpaintwizard" seem reasonable for touch up paint. I will probably give them a try, if and when necessary.

I used to find the same, would end up replacing the chips with large paint blobs
I found the touch up sticks I bought from the dealer were part of the problem
last time I just got a kit off of the Internet, half the price of one Seat paint stick, came with a bottle of paint, bottle of lacquer, load of micro brushes,IPA wipes, various grades of emery paper and some other stuff
Perfect colour match too :)
