PD170 Turbo change DIY?

Right, I've got the dreaded police siren whistle on my leon fr tdi. I've had a good search on the forums but cant find any information regarding the removal of the turbo charger.

Im looking to purchase a cartridge hopefully before the turbo gets any worse. I have access to a ramp and would just like to know if anyone's undertaken this job themselves? How easy is the turbo to remove and replace, can it be done in situ etc without removing engine?.

Any views and recommendations would be appreciated so im not going in blind!

Also while I've got the downpipe off, im considering gutting the DPF and welding back up. Would this cause any issues bar EML if I were to drive it for a few days before I could get the dpf function mapped out?

yes, I removed the turbocharger while doing the head replacement on my BKD. just follow the steps here

it's not rocket science as long as you have the proper tools.
