You can go thicker than 2mm if you want, although 2mm will do the job perfectly fine. If you want thicker, just warm it up before you try and bend it.

I'm fairly sure that most lenses are normally around 2mm anyway, so it will work as well as a normal lens. But obviously be cheaper to replace when it gets damaged.
 
The whole fig light unit and cover it sits in is being replaced with a cleaner looking finish I.e. A Perspex blanking plate which is to be covered
