With lots of indoors time on my hands I decided to relive the past and see how good the Cupra R was back in its heyday with EVO mag issue 67.

A read EVO with a cold beer made it on my to do list this weekend. The leon came out on top with 4 stars vs 3.5 for the renault. I'm guessing this isnt the R26 which in more recent issue trumps the LCR.
I also found an older issue of EVO with a hot hatch group test and the LCR beat the Audi S3, Alfa GTA, mini cooper S and Focus RS. It only lost out to an impreza wrx and R32 golf and actually got some praise for handling and obviously price. Can you imagine if hot hatches were £18k rather than the £30k most start at today!

Another dull update but part and parcel of owning a modern classic. I noticed before lockdown that washer fluid on the front windscreen seemed to come out the jets but also under the scuttle.
I removed the wipers, pollen filter panel and then the scuttle pulled off. I couldnt see a problem to start with, it all looked fine so I tested the washer jets and saw it was leaking in the middle of the pipe from a minuscule crack.
To fix it I am going to use 2x5mm OD connectors and I'm waiting for some 5mm ID washer hose to be delivered. While I'm waiting I tried to give everything a bit of a clean (not shown in pics) but should be pretty simple to sort out depending on how long the postman takes to deliver the part.

Wife bought a furniture clinic steering wheel repair kit for me at christmas and I forgot I had it till i was looking for something else in the garage this weekend. Now my steering wheel wasnt in terrible shape, red showing in the odd place but better than most as well as the odd finger nail scrapes that would also be nice to sort at the top an bottom.
The kit is pretty comprehensive and includes degreaser, sand paper, leather binder, black leather paint, foam applicators and a cloth.
For the cleaning phase I used a wet wipe and my god it was grotty. Next up some sanding with 320 grit paper. This step is pretty daunting as once you start you cant go back. I left the leather binding as mine was in good shape so I degreased it and went straight to paint. The paint is pretty thin and quick drying therefore needs lots of coats. The foam applicator is a fairly blunt tool lacking the finesse you need to avoid the red stitching.
All done and I had enough left over to sort the gear knob although I forgot the hand brake DOH!. Overall I was pretty impressed for less than £20 but need to see how it wears next.

This year I've entered the sevenoaks district motorsport speed league for the sprint and hillclimb championship. Like every other sport affected by coronavirus it is on hold so its given me time to make up some magnetic stickers for my race numbers. Seat Sport logos will go nicely with a recent purchase
