Poor Pedro's 8v GTI Gearbox Has Blown...HELP

I took my gti to stratford at the weekend for global gathering, he lasted all 190 miles there and only 178 back untill he decided to **** its gearbox and pin both me and my mate and a back seat full of camping gear on the dash. Several loud bangs followed by alot of churning and grinding meant i nursed poor pedro home and safe. I have had the street's mechanic on it and clearly the gearbox has been spanked. He was on about a re-furb by sending it away to someone in bradford or maybe looking at a second hand box. My rather long winding question is where can i get a second hand box as i cannot find one anywhere the car is mk2 2.0 gti 8V on a T-reg. Any help would be amazing thanks! Andy

ive just been looking through the bay and spotted at least 6 gearboxes that would fit.

Can you help me in finding which ones do fit? I am a complete sap when it comes to knowing which boxes will or wont fit. Ive seen some on there but not sure some are completely compatible. Could you help me out with item numbers? if your 100% sure they will fit i'll be going off your top advice and buying which ever one you say will fit. Thanks for helping me out, its so hard to get decent advice as the monkeys round here in the garages are useless(apart from my neighbour lloyd he's very good but ive not had chance to chat proply yet about a re-furb or a second hander going in) Thanks for your help VNGTX!

As far as I'm aware the 8V Beezer still uses an 020 box which means any transmission from a MK2 or MK3 Golf will fit with the exception of the 16V ABF (MK3) and the VR6 (MK3) You can even use one from a Diesel.

I've got a v reg gti 8v my gearbox code is dfq the code should be under your boot mat it will have your engine code next to it.

OK, ive done the tours of scrappers around me and it would seem this box is rarer than i had imagined. I have been to 4 scrappers around the south lakes and not one has a box, ive checked out mk2 golfs - none checked mk3 golfs - none. All ive found is a box from a vw golf cl, the box looks very similar but i was told by a dub nut that my first gear would be short if i used that box. Ive filled quote sites in online and all i get back is daft prices of £795!!!!!!(fitted, but still wow @ price) £279, £345 all sorts of daft prices. If anyone can find me a box that will fit i will let you sleep with my missus, im tearing my hair out as i just cant get my hands on one, or atleast one for the right price. Its MK2 2.0 GTI 8v Ibiza. Please help me fix poor pedro!
