Hi all,

Currently agonising over the choice of purchasing either a new Leon Cupra 290 or a Hyundai i30N Performance Fastback. Both cars are pretty evenly matched.

The 'Hundy' gets my vote visually, but it's a relatively new beast and a bit of an unknown for longevity and reliability. But, a 5 year warranty against the SEAT's 3 years is tempting.

But why am I then considering the SEAT? Less lairy looks and more of a 'sleeper' - that's appealing too and looks damn good in white with those 19" rims. Also, it's more established than the Hundy and seems to have a huge following.

Reading the i30N forum, there are quite a few niggles and issues with this new model which are a little off putting.

So, how much can I get either for? I can get a 2019 (19 plate) delivery mileage or ex-demo i30N for around £23 - 25k.

But, and here's the carrot, I can get a brand new Cupra 290 on the road for a shade under £22k. No brainer really.

I don't expect anyone to make the decision for me, but happy to be persuaded down the Cupra route.

Thanks for 'listening'....

I know a few people with the i30N and although they do look nice I just don’t see them being as good as a CUPRA.

In my opinion (and yes I am biased) go for the CUPRA. No real niggles to worry about and very upgradable to 500bhp if you’re so inclined. Personally my CUPRA 300 is enough for me and it has the sleeper looks and the surprise on other drivers face when your right foot gets heavy is a sight to behold.

Go CUPRA, you won’t regret it. Oh and if you gave a choice go LUX. Heated Bucket Seats on the new model and they are sooooo nice (wish mine had them)

Thanks for your reply Maypack. Yes, I'd go for the Lux which for me would be around £22.5k.

The only faff with a new one of these is the six month lead time!

Are you looking to lease up, pcp or buy outright? I know some dealers have certain models available from showrooms but not sure what the prices would be on those.

If looking for a built to order it’s definitely a waiting game. But again at £22.5k it’s a decent trade off price v wait.

Cash purchase. Just had confirmation that the Lux will be £22,195 should I go down the SEAT route.

Delivery approx 14 weeks, so an improvement there!

Has the 300 been dropped and been replaced by the 290? A tad confused there.

The Hatchback is now a 290 due to WLTP emissions. It has a GPF built into the exhaust which the 300 doesn’t have. The 290 also has a digital dash and a 7 speed DSG whereas my 300 doesn’t have the digital dash and has the 6 speed DSG.

A lot of 290 owners say that the exhaust system is a lot quieter than the 300.

I think the power output is reduced too 297ish on a 300 to 286ish on a 290. I say ish as some have been dynoed at a lot higher than what they are catalogued as being.

The ST remains a 300 though...

Thanks for your help Maypack.

No worries. That’s what this place is all about. I’m sure when you finally get your CUPRA (and I’m sure you will) there will be loads more things you’ll want to ask. And there’s a great knowledge base on this forum with guys who know a heck of a lot more than me.

Yep, these forums are great places, invaluable I'd say. Been on the BMW 5 Series forum for over 10 years now.

Apart from our two 'everyday' family cars, my hobby interest is my BMW E39 540i Sport with the lovely 4.4 V8. The SEAT (or Hundy) would be a fine addition.

You’ll probably save money fuelling the CUPRA rather than the Beamer

Here's the 540. Ex Japan, less than 40k miles and in superb condition.

One other engine related fact, the new 290 only has one bank of high pressure injectors in order to get through WLTP the impact of this is that the new engines will suffer with coke build up and need to be decoked like the previous generation of cars.

The original 280/290/300 series cars had an extra bank of low pressure injectors that stopped this problem.

You should also look at the 300 series as i suspect for the money you can get a much better equipped car and should you be into modifying engines better base unit to do so.

Welcome to the forum.

If you want to check out some seat cars we have a meet in doncaster on the 1st September and you will see a range of cars from stock to heavily modified.

As I said... some very knowledgable people on this forum and @theoldboy is a personal friend of mine who has a Beast of a Cupra which is a Beaut.

As said come along to our next meet at Doncaster for some ideas of stock cars up to Stage 3+ modified cars. May be a long journey for you but well worth it.

And if you fancy a weekend away a number of us are staying in a hotel the night before for a glass or two of beer and lots of food and car chat :)

As @Maypack has been nice about my car I should also point out he has the best color red car that Seat have made.

I've read about this potential coking problem before I think. Is it to do with the fuel being injected directly into the cylinder?

Is this really progress, having to de-coke a modern engine? I used to do this to a franchise's back in the 80s!

How serious an issue is it? Whether I buy the Hundy or SEAT, it will only be doing around 6000 miles per year and I'd be keeping it long term, around five years.
