My old trusty (cough) Garmin unit has finally given up so I've replaced it with a portable Apple car play unit that works really well.

My question is, is there a way to wire up power from the old socket on the top of the dash that the Garmin unit used to plug into rather than running a cable from the cig lighter? (I hate cables!)

Many Thanks

There’s no official way to do this.
You could remove the port and splice into the wires however for this you’ll need to know which ones are for positive and negative.

You're best bet is just hardwiring it from the fuse box and it’s simpler.

Which apple car play unit did you buy?

took a feed of the back of the lighter socket and ran the cable up though the old mount point.

It's just a generic Chinese one but works really well!
