Who's running a decat and what's it like? Any downsides to it?

My CAT has started to rattle and needs replacing, so naturally this has got me thinking of going decat! Apart from possibly flames out the exhaust and a CEL and needing a CAT for MOT time - anything else to know?

pros

more power,
better throttle response
better driveabilty

cons

mot fail
depends how well your car is running can stink (mine didn't though)
louder tone (can be pro or con depending what you like)

Well I'm going to go decat until I can afford a new sports CAT, MOT isn't due until the end of January. Just waiting on a date to get the car in and have the old rattly CAT cut off and a piece of straight 3" pipe fitted. £60-70 for a decat or around £230 for a new sports CAT to be supplied and fitted.

Been running de-cat since 1.8T GT 30 stroker engine for over a year now and had to install a cat for Mot due in August. Power feels reduced, possiblly lost some boost too:confused:
I'll be removing next week but might take some logs for comparison's sake:think:

this is only true if you have a small cat! you can loose some power if the cat is to small, then you get more backpressure.
if the cat is big enough then you dont loose power.

Pros....Noise, response and power.

Cons mot fail!(

But saying that, my exhaust on the day of my mot was a straight through with no cat and no silencers, it passed.
