Purchased a Leon FR 1.4 TSI yesterday!

After being a member of this forum for 5 years, mainly lurking, and having owned 2 Ibizas (a 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI FR), I yesterday moved up into the Leon owners club, after putting a deposit down on a 1.4 TSI Leon FR with Technology Pack.

I was forced to look for a new car after my Ibiza FR got written off on the way to work, with someone pulling out of a side road and slamming into the side of it :(

I was going to go for a brand new Ibiza 1.4 TSI ACT, but then a 6 month old Leon caught my eye at a semi-local dealer, and I loved it! With the stance of the car, the kit it has on it (especially with the technology pack) and the reviews its received - it turned into a no-brainer.

Sitting in it, you appreciate just how much more you're getting for your money. So many little things add up: centre armrest, storage boxes under the seats, dual zone climate control, a much more generous boot, a dash-mounted LCD with touch screen, leather trimmed seats, steering wheel mounted controls, ambient lighting, full LED headlights with mean looking DRL's, the list goes on… it's a great car!

As a new owner, I have a few questions:

  • Are there any common problems I should be aware of with the car or engine?
  • Is there anything you didn't know about the car until a few months down the line? Little features that might not be so obvious at first glance…
  • Is it an option upgrade the alloy's to different Seat ones in the future? I loved the look of the 18" ones, not that these are awful.
  • Has anyone had one re-mapped? Any idea of performance gains?
  • What's real-world fuel economy like? I used to get 60 MPG on the way to work in the Ibiza, so I'm hoping it won't be too bad!
Would be great to hear the thoughts of other owners!

I collect her on Friday, and will be sure to take plenty of photos! In the meantime, here's one from the dealer:

I got my 1.4 on Saturday (it has replaced my 7yr old mk4 Ibiza) and love it. If you look in the mk3 leon FAQ forum you can download the manual for the car and infotainment system. So many settings can be set on the dash screw which you would of needed vagcom / VCDS on the Ibizas.

Plenty of gadgets and toys in the car, a lot of which I havnt got to play with yet.
6 speed gearbox is great and the car has the right balance of power vs economy.

I averaged 52.5mpg today over 25 miles so pleased with that!!

You will definately enjoy it!

Congrats on the new purchase! I've got a leon 1.4 fr myself, done 3000 ok 2 months mixed driving and averaged 40mpg, but that's not exactly been a 3000 mile economy run let's say that so I'm very pleased!

Hold the lock button to fold the mirrors in!

Hope Friday comes quickly for you mate!

After picking the car up yesterday, I can confirm that I love it!

The engine is very refined, punchy enough, the car looks stunning, the LED headlights are fantastic (had a good run through some country lanes in them last night) and the audio is pretty good too - the Bluetooth streaming does a nice job, and it's fun selecting "Mark's Car" on my iPhone via AirPlay!

So far whilst playing around I've averaged about 38mpg, so a big drop from my 60mpg Ibiza FR 2.0 TDI. However, I haven't exactly been on an economy drive… I should get a much better indication of economy once I've done the daily commute for a week - I'd like to think I can get closer to 50mpg then, but we'll see!

A lot of my driving is on Spanish motorways where there are never any hold ups and you can legally cruise at just under 80.

On that basis, I get about 43mpg on the actual motorway bit. On normal roads at about 40 or less it can go as high as 53mpg but I have to try very hard for that. Overall after 4000km actual (not indicated) average is about 36mpg.
