Help. My rad fan wont cut in. The car seems to heat up quite quick, the gauge goes in the red, but the fan wont cut in. I've removed the plug to the rad fan switch & bridged it, but still nothing. I've powered up the fan & it works ok. Checked voltage at fan switch, & its 5.4v. Checked if there's power to the fan itself, but nothing.

Already shorted out rad fan switch, but fan not operating, & got no power at fan.Everything is getting hot, but fan just wont cut in.I know it works cos I've shoved 12volts straight onto it. Also changed the relay, & checked fuses. Checked voltage at rad fan switch, & its only 5.4v. Surely its gotta be 12v, or is that only when it sends a signal to the fan?

ok looked at the haynes book of lies, nice and easy.
fuse 19 30A coolant fan
from there red wire to pin 2 of engine coolant fan switch
both pins 1 and three are outputs, pin 1 is red/white, pin 3 is red/black
pin 1 from switch goes to pin 2 at the fan, pin 3 from the switch goes to pin 1 of the fan, which makes pin (black) the ground.

so you should have 12v pos at pin 2 of the fan switch if not break in the cable if the fuse is ok.

fuses don't normal go weak, but try and replace it to see for sure.
As for the wire, if you are doing a proper job then yes new loom, but I would run one new cable to the fan switch.

mine does the same thing....it doesnt go quite as far as all the way but on one journey it will be bang on centre, the next just over, the next three quaters....then back to centre. The garage has put it down to a sticky thermo.

the part is about £18 so ive been told. My fan doesnt kick in either...so i always tell myself not to worry as the engine cant be getting that hot.:headhurt:

yeah but if he is shorting out the switch and the fan is not working he has a problem. Best to sort as you don't want a overheating engine now do you ?

Rioght... sorted fan. Shorted out switch, & fan runs. Ran engine for bout half hour, gauge went into red, fan didn't cut in. All hoses are hot, & radiator is hot, fan just not cutting in. Could it be thermostat now? Doin my bloody head in !!!

Its a new switch. I put it in today. Ran the engine with rad cap on, nothing happened, ran it with rad cap off, & it just kept boiling over. Cant work it out. Unless its a huge airlock.

Have the same problem here, changed the fan thermo but didn't solve it.
But the problem is that it sometimes works and then it stops.
it only works on low speed if i am turning the A.C on .

Maybe you've got a massive airlock too.I used to have a tigra that did that. I'm putting a new thermostat in tomorrow. That way I know everything works. Just gonna have to try & bleed it right up. Wot do ya reckon?

I wish it was a massive airlock, we did everything for it but no hope .
my 1st problem was that the temp slightly goes after the center and then goes down .
changed internal thermo for it, but still the same, but i was noticing that the fan sometimes run at the correct temp and sometimes not.
so i changed the rad thermo with a new 1 , but the fan worked on the 2nd temp which is 105 , and never kicked in the 1st temp 85 .
so i replaced it again with the old thermo , and then the car was good, but it did it again on my way to work. but this time it didnt work at all.

I am having very similar problems. There is just no consistency to what the temp gauge shows….it doenst heat up in traffic and just yo yo’s between half way and ¾’s….ive never had this problem with an Ibiza before…I have it booked in to that the thermo changed on Thursday.

My fan never kicks in while the car is running, but it does kick in when I switch the car off for about 15 / 20 seconds and then stops. Ive had the gasket checked and its been given the all clear so anything else I can take in my stride..

Although all of this is eating into my modding money !!!!
