I recently did a run from SE london to Scarborough roughly 275 miles.
I managed an average of 59.4mpg travelling mostly between 50 and 70mph.

Car is just coming up to 11k miles now, its a 170 cr 59 plate

My old PD130 seemed to produce better figures than these
Yes, it's a smaller displacement engine with much less power available to you... so that shouldn't be a big surprise.

The FR TDIs are for people who want a fun/sporty drive but can't afford to spend their entire wage on V-Power Unleaded... and I think the derv FR fits that niche very nicely. Like everything, it's a compromise.

Personally I decided I wanted sacrifice almost all performance to get the cheapest running costs, whilst keeping the firm-but-comfy ride, good handling, great looks and extensive tech/gadgets that the Leon provides, so the Ecomotive is a perfect match for me.

That said, if I didn't have a long commute and especially if I only made short trips around town, I'd have probably plumped for a Prius or Lexus CT... :ban:

Hybrids absolutely stomp on diesels for efficiency round town. It's just that they're not great for longer journeys, where they're effectively just lugging around a very heavy battery using a small petrol engine. For my most common journeys, an eco diesel is the only way to cheap fuel bills (at the moment anyway).

Just managed to get 54.20 mpg over a tank of fuel - 643 range and it had about 1 litre left when the nozzle cut out.

On board trip said 53 average but iPhone app worked it out different

Either pleased to get that amount of miles from a single tank!

My Exeo CR170 did an average of 53.3 on a 700mile holiday trip during the course of a week. All on one tank too. :D

At times I flicked it over to the live view and spotted readings of 66mpg on the flat bits of duel carriageway with the cruise set to 70.

I'm well happy because it goes really well too.

We've had our 11MY Leon FR CR TDI for about six weeks. The wife drives it Mon to Fri, 12 miles a roads & 48 miles on m/way every day. Drives at 70 on m/way getting so far about 56 MPG from a tank.

Went to Cornwall the weekend, had to get down to Devon quickly for an eBay pick up, so drove down on cruise control at 85mph for about 200 miles, MPG for the trip dropped to 45MPG. On the way back drove at 70mph on cruise control for 225 miles and got 57MPG.

I'm finding the engine like a combination between Usain Bolt & Paula Radcliffe, if you want a racer, it can be it, if you want a long distance runner then it can be that as well. Just depends how you want to drive it.
